Shirley Faulk Enos, 74, of Austin, Texas, died peacefully on Sunday, September 12, 2010.
Shirley was born to Houston Hamilton Faulk and Vida Maberry Faulk on their family farm near Hawkins and Big Sandy, Texas. She is a descendant of the Faulk family that first settled in that area in the 1870s. Shirley’s family moved many times in her later childhood because of her father’s work for Humble Oil, and Shirley graduated high school in McCamey, Texas. She then came to Austin to attend the University of Texas. She lived at the Christian Faith and Life Community and met Robert Enos, the love of her life. Shirley and Bob were married in 1956, and their wedding was officiated by the Reverend Jack Lewis. In 2006, at the original site of the Christian Faith and Life Community (now called the Mansion at Judge’s Hill), they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Shirley and Bob were the parents of four sons, whom they loved so dearly.
From the time she came to Austin until her death, Shirley was an active member and Elder at University Presbyterian Church. She served in many capacities at the church including Moderator of the Deacons. Shirley cherished her UPC church family, notably the women of the Martha Presbyterian Women’s Circle and her many dear friends at the Presbyterian Children’s Home.
Shirley received her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She spent her entire working career in the Austin ISD – first, for many years, as an associate school psychologist, and later as the school counselor at Sunset Valley Elementary. She retired in 1996. Shirley was a dedicated volunteer mediator at the Austin Dispute Resolution Center. She was also a long-time active member of Beyond War, a group that advocated for nuclear disarmament, and she educated and advocated for peace in our country and in the many conflicts in Central America. As a Christian, a counselor, a mediator and in so many other ways, Shirley was a tireless advocate for peace and conflict resolution through non-violent means. She was an avid gardener and birder. Her tender love for all God’s creatures shone throughout her entire life. Shirley was an active member in the Texas Psychological Association, the Austin Retired Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. As a descendant of Phillip Faulk, Sr., of North Carolina, Shirley was a certified member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In their retirement, Bob and Shirley saw many parts of the world including several trips to Europe, Africa, Hawaii, Alaska and the Galapagos Islands.
Mrs. Enos was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Enos, by her son, John Enos, and by her brother, John Dillon Faulk. She is survived by her sister, Sandra Alexander of Post, Texas; cousin, Nelda Fletcher and her husband Raymond Fletcher of Waco; sister-in-law, Anna Lea Faulk of Austin; sons, Greg Enos of Houston, David Enos and his wife Linda of Amarillo, and Paul Enos and his wife Colleen of Austin; and by her many nieces, nephews and grandchildren, all of whom gave her so much joy.
Special thanks to the tender caregivers of Odyssey Hospice Care and to her long-time primary care doctor, Gil Roebuck, M.D.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010, at University Presbyterian Church, 2203 San Antonio Street, Austin, Texas 78705.
