Shirley Fry Irvin

We thank Miss Irvin for the many accomplishments achieved by her in the professional tennis arena.To the family as time passes I hope you will be able to enjoy all of the great memories Miss Irvin leaves behind. I hope for you comfort from our Creator as you grieve. You have my sympathy.

When Shirley lived in Longwood, FL she frequently ate dinner with my father, along with the other "girls" of Building C. I joined them whenever I was visiting, and I adored Shirley. She was a real trailblazer for women in sports and I really admired her. Condolences to her family--she was one great woman!

Shirley was a great friend of my mother, Betty McIlwaine Holcombe. I had the honor of playing some informal, fun doubles with Shirley, Betty Pratt and my mother. My condolences to the family.

I’m Rich Grossman. Scott, I gave you private clarinet lessons when you were in junior high. One time at a lesson, you told me that your mom won Wimbledon the U.S. Open, the Australian Open, and Roland Garros. I was stunned, especially because I played first singles on my high school tennis team. You emphatically told me not to ask your mother any questions about her tennis career. That was awfully tough for me, but I respected your wishes. After that, I did some research about your mom. Wow, she was something special in tennis!
