Shirley Marie Hynes, age 85, lifelong area resident, died peacefully at home on July 8, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the town of Poughkeepsie, NY on February 2, 1940. She attended Arlington Central School District and graduated from the Poughkeepsie City School District. Shirley attended St. John's Church in Pawling and St. Denis Church in Hopewell Junction.
On November 30, 1958, she married the love of her life, Vincent E. Hynes, who predeceased her on February 23, 2024. They worked hard and played hard during their 66-year marriage. Entertaining family and friends for any occasion was a constant highlight of their life. They also loved to travel the world - their favorite place was Ireland which they visited on four occasions.
Shirley began her broad and diverse career history as a hairdresser at the Bella Donna Salon in Poughkeepsie and privately in her home, for many years. She was also a licensed real estate agent for many years, a co-owner of the ladies' apparel shop Hynes Red Barn in Lagrangeville for ten years, a long-time Town of Beekman Tax Assessor and eventually retired after many years as the Town of Lewisboro Tax Assessor.
Her community services included being a 4-H leader for many years, a Town of Beekman Ladies Auxiliary lifetime member, and a Town of Beekman Fire Department lifetime member where she drove the ambulance for many years. She was an avid reader and loved to quilt.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents Hardy and Sadie Helen (Snyder) Brownell, her sister Barbara Simmons and brother-in-law John Simmons, and her brother, her sister-in-law Nancy Hynes Briggs, her father in-law and mother-in-laws Vincent J and Cora Tobin Hynes, and Constance Crutchfield Rowe.
She is survived by her daughter Suzann Peterson and husband Bruce; daughter Wendy Travis and husband Howard; and son Darrell Hynes and companion Denise Kearsing.
She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Christopher Lombardi (Melissa), Stefanie Lombardi, Vincent J Hynes (Samatha), and Raymond Hynes (Kathleen), as well as great grandchildren: Madison Lombardi, Logan Lombardi, Eli Jones-Lombardi, Lily Hynes, Peyton Hynes, Otto Hynes, Cole Hynes, and Finn Hynes.
Also surviving are her sisters, Sandra Prosser, Beverly Baright, Katherine Brownell; sister-in-law Carol Robin and brother-in-law Jim Robin; her sister-in-law Jeanette Sasser, brother-in-law Bruce Copeland and sister-in-law Shelly Copeland, brother-in-law Dan Briggs, and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, dear and special local friends, as well as dear friends who she and Vincent spent many winters with in Pompano, Florida.
The family would like to express thanks to Rofina and the Angels on Call Health Agency, and to the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice for their kindness and care.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday July 13, 2025, from 2 - 5 pm at McHoul's Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 10am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
