Shirley Jackman Obituary
JACKMAN, Shirley Anne, born July 13, 1928, passed away on November 27, 2021. She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Dowling; stepmother, Effie Muir; father, George Mathieson. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Roy Parker Jackman; sister, Ellen Wilde of Mesa, Arizona; son, Theodore Jackman and his wife, Barbara, of Medford, New Jersey (children, Casey Smith, Jennifer Lamb, Brian Jackman, Katelin Jackman); son, William Jackman and his wife, Kathy, of Taylors, South Carolina (children, Candace Lo, Christopher Jackman, Elizabeth Ludwig, Susan Jackson, Robert Jackman); daughter, Clara Garbett of Glen Allen, Virginia (children, Megan Garbett, Stuart Garbett); and 12 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a graduate of Bucknell University, where she met her husband-to-be in 1946. She graduated in 1950 and they were married. They had 72 great years of happy days together, travelling extensively. Shirley did much ancestor research, which tied into much of their travel together. She was recognized by First Families of Washington County, Ohio on May 18, 2013, in recognition of proving descent from settlers in the original area called Washington County before 1830 – her ancestor was James Dowling, 1768 to 1842. Shirley was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Phi chapter since March 1951. She was also a member of P.E.O. while living in three states, Ohio, Massachusetts and Virginia, and she served as president while living in Sandwich, Massachusetts. She also served as a volunteer docent in the famous Sandwich Glass Museum.
While living in Montgomery Township, New Jersey, Shirley worked as a substitute teacher in their expanding school and was a substitute in most every grade, enabling her to keep a watchful eye on her three children. Roy's work caused several moves for the family and took them to Hamilton, Ohio, where Roy retired and they planned their retirement home on Cape Cod, where they had honeymooned and often visited in the summer. They lived in their dream house for 16 years before coming to Virginia to be near family. Shirley enjoyed the garden and belonged to a garden club at each place they lived except here in Virginia.
Until she became ill in 2019, Roy and Shirley regularly travelled both domestically and internationally. Their last trip was back to where they met, Bucknell, for Roy's 70th reunion with Clara as their chaperone.
The family will receive friends at the Hunton Baptist Church, 11660 Greenwood Road, Glen Allen, Va. 23059, on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the service at 11 a.m. The family suggests masks. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Hunton Baptist Church will be appreciated.
