Shirley Johnson Obituary

Shirley Ann Johnson
Shirley Ann (Kowatch) Johnson, 87, of Jamison, PA; longtime resident of Ridgefield, CT, died peacefully on Thursday, January 30, 2025. She was the loving wife of the late Clifford James Johnson.
Shirley was born in Uniontown, PA on November 11, 1937; a daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Kline) Kowatch where she grew up with her younger brother, Donald. As a lover of music, she played the tenor saxophone in a swing dance band. She left Uniontown after her graduation from high school and took a job with the FBI in Washington, DC where she met and fell in love with the only man she would ever marry, Cliff.
With the birth of Stacia in 1964 and then Kristi 1966, Shirley and Cliff started their family. They moved to Bronxville, NY where, in 1968, Jeff was born and then Greg in 1970. Shirley and Cliff finally settled in Ridgefield, CT where their fifth child, Susan, was born in 1972. It was here that she would raise her family and live for the next fifty-one years.
Mrs. Johnson was a retired Executive Secretary for Duty Free International. She was a devout parishioner of Saint Mary's Church where she sang in the choir for over 40 years. She and her family were members of Lakeside Field club where she enjoyed tennis with her husband and cheered at her children's swim meets every Saturday morning during the summer. She was an avid collector of antiques, played bridge, adored Bissinger's Candy, and sang with the Fairfield County Choral all over the world.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by Stacia, Kristi, Jeff, Greg, and Susan, their spouses, and her eight grandchildren: Owen, Jake, Kayla, Ethan, Kyle, Sophia, Kaitlyn, and Ben, who loved and laughed with her as she told stories of her life around the largest Christmas Dinner table you've ever seen.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Mary's Church, 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Interment will follow in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield. Contributions in Mrs. Johnson's memory may be made to The American Heart Association or The American Lung Association.

Thoughts about Aunt Shirley
from Dave
This morning, on the day of her funeral....

While Dave was laying in the bed this morning, I was reminding him that today was the funeral for Aunt Shirley, and that her children would be saying their final good-byes to their mother.... He was looking straight up at the ceiling as I talked and then began simply "thinking aloud":

"She is with the Lord....
She is with the Lord....
We miss her,
But especially her children.
She is in a better place....
She is living a new life.
But it is a different life.
It is a better life.
She is not unhappy...."

Then he stopped. These were nearly his exact words. I am hoping they comfort you.

Love -
Aunt Carole

Dear Kristi, Susie, Stacy, Jeff, and Greg -

I was very sad to hear this news of your mom passing away. I will always carry very special memories of her and your family. The first memory was that childhood moment when we first heard the news of your father´s passing. Quite frankly, we were too young to even know the connection between your family and my mom. Your dad was her favorite cousin. And my mom was quite shaken. We left our vacation and drove straight to Ridgefield, CT. I don´t know if we missed the wake or if my mom only was at the wake, but I do remember the gathering at your home following it. While my mom was already connected to your family, as far as I am concerned, that was the day that our families connected, and we certainly enjoyed the times when we would visit.
Your mom was a wonderful "aunt" and we were happy to have more `cousins´ and were glad to get to know more of mom´s side of our family. One memory I have of those days was sledding together. Another memory was about a snake that allegedly went missing in your house. Your Connecticut home was amazing.
Though there were many family get togethers through the years, I know Tami and I missed a lot while we lived in Poland. And it is incredibly unfortunate that I am currently in Poland and won´t be home until February 10.
Please know that we keep you all very close to our hearts. Life moves us around and while I am glad for the family memories of a bygone day, they also bring a tint of sadness that those days are now just memories....memories of family and extended family loving and supporting one another in happy, as well as difficult days.
We are praying for you all especially this week, but also beyond this week. You all will always be family, regardless of distance and the various roads we each find ourselves on.

With Love,

Mark and Tami Swaim

To Kristi, Susie, Stacy, Jeff, and Greg -

I remember the first time our family came to visit yours in Ridgefield CT. We went sleigh riding and ice skating and teased Susie to death. That was a great memory. Uncle Cliff was a JRR Tolken fan like I and we talked about hobbits, trolls, and wizards. Aunt Shirley was the master of the performing arts - encouraging her children in the traditions of the family. She later became member of the oratorio society and sang many of the great choruses of the great masters. She was always interested in each of the nephews and nieces. Every Christmas she was the Avon lady for all nieces. She raised wonderful children - a tribute to any mother. She worked for the Bureau! In sum she was a multi-talented woman. We shall miss her. Good night, Aunt Shirley, we´ll see you in the morning.

With love,
David and Ellen Swaim
