Shirley Mae Jeanet Kruiter was born December 19, 1937 in Estelline, South Dakota to Ernest James and Lilian Anna (Factor) Kossman. After graduating from high school Shirley was employed at 3M in Brookings, South Dakota.
Shirley was united in marriage with Paul Kruiter on June 14, 1974 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in
Watertown, South Dakota. The couple spent several years farming by Castlewood; and then moved to Volga when Paul worked in Brookings; later they moved to Watertown.
Shirley and Paul enjoyed spending time in Arizona with friends, fishing, playing cards and traveling the country. Their home was filled with nostalgia from all of their trips. Shirley and Paul had celebrated 39 (almost 40) years of marriage before Paul passed away May 1, 2014.
Shirley always remembered everyone's birthdays and loved staying connected through birthday cards and letters. She enjoyed spending time with family, especially on the holidays. When the great nieces and nephews would be home, she loved to see them and buy small treats, little gifts or even fireworks for them to enjoy. Laughter was shared when she teamed up for yard games like ladder ball or tossing water balloons. Shirley always held memories dear and had an archive of photos and videos of everyone's life. She also cherished her time to talk and spend time with friends.
Shirley is survived by her sister-in-law, Mayme Walburg of Sioux Center, IA; her nieces and nephews, Sharon (Bob) Byer of
Watertown, SD, Doug (Bev) Kruiter of Castlewood, SD, Kevin (Kathy) Kruiter of
Watertown, SD; LeRoy (Jo) Walburg of Sioux Center, IA, Don (Deanne) Walburg of Orange City, IA, Lori (Stan) Oostra of Rock Valley, IA and Cheryl (Tom) Andresen of Holstein, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Richard Koosman; her brothers-in-law, Ben Kruiter and Bernard Walburg; and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Kruiter.
