With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Shirley Louise Layman, who went to be with our Lord and Savior on April 16th, 2025, at the age of 83. She was a shining light to all who knew her, full of laughter, love and generosity.
Shirley was born to Fred and Virginia (Bartley) Hardison on July 7th, 1941, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina. She was raised with her younger brother in Holly Ridge, North Carolina and graduated from Dixon High School in 1959. She stayed connected with her school friends by returning to her hometown for countless high school reunions.
Shirley married Leonard Julian Layman on September 8th, 1961, and they went on to welcome six beautiful children. They enjoyed 63 years of life together.
Shirley lived a life rich with purpose and joy. She was a loving and involved mother who was always there for her children. She also was blessed with 6 grandchildren who she adored with all her heart. They were truly her pride and joy. She worked for several different companies throughout the years and eventually retired as the Manager for Weichert Realtors. In 2010, Shirley and Leonard moved away from Alexandria, VA and settled in Winchester, VA. Here Shirley found a steadfast community of friends and was always on the go. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was very involved in church activities, her favorite being "Singing Seniors". She volunteered countless hours at Winchester Medical Center and would also volunteer during local election cycles. She liked to be out and about and had fun traveling to new places. She enjoyed crocheting, coloring, and picking fresh strawberries and peaches. She loved to get her nails manicured and her hair styled. She took tremendous pride in keeping up with the latest trends and was always well dressed. She was very quick witted and loved to laugh. She had an infectious laugh and a spirit that drew people in. Above all else she was a woman of incredible strength who loved spending time with her family. She was the most amazing wife, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her husband she is also survived by her children Regina Layman, Curt J Layman, Timothy Layman (Maribel), Cynthia Villalon (Jorge), Christina Smith (Ron) and Rebecca Layman; her grandchildren Tyler DeLisle (Cassie), Caitlin Villalon, Kendall Harris, Christopher Villalon, Ashley Layman and Amber Layman; her brother Fred Hardison (Patricia) and also many loving nieces and nephews, all of whom carry forward her legacy.
Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation Tuesday April 22nd from 6-8pm at the Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, 1600 Amherst St. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday (April 23) at 10:30 AM at First Baptist Church of Winchester, 205 W Piccadilly St, Winchester with Rev. Dr. Kristin Adkins Whitesides officiating. Following the service all are invited to a continued time of Food and Fellowship in celebrating Shirley's life in the Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will take place at 4pm at Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria with Pastor Bart Purdy officiating the Committal Prayers.
