Shirley McGee went to Heaven to be with the Lord and all her loved ones in Heaven on April 20th, 2025, Easter Sunday morning at the age of 84. She passed away peacefully at Trustwell Living of Overland Park with her friend Jill and several family members spending much time with her.
Shirley McGee was born in Maryville, Missouri on January 11th, 1941; she lived in Wilcox Missouri until her teenage years when the family moved to Kansas city.
Shirley attended Overland Park Christian Church for much of her life and enjoyed fellowship before worship, where she served God by serving others coffee and donuts. Shirley had a love for Children, Jesus and God, Elvis Presley songs, every holiday, and for dogs. She raised her daughter Tonya Jean Booker and her son Tim McGee on her own and made sure they knew Jesus and God, giving them a loving life.
For a time there were 5 generations in the family and Shirley took great pride in this, frequently mentioning it. Shirley spoiled and blessed her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She ran an in-home licensed daycare for her career and really enjoyed children and shaping their lives. She didn't just 'watch' the children but taught them. She taught them letters, numbers, morals, and values, all in a loving way. Shirley had a love for the children she watched as if they were her own children.
She would take her daycare kids and grandkids to the park to swing and play, then take them to go for ice cream. These are the times that she had some of her biggest smiles of love. Shirley had Santa come to her daycare every year, and even had a Halloween celebration every year. Many of the parents would bring their children to her home for trick or treating, as she highly decorated her home and dressed up for every holiday.
Shirley is preceded in death by her mother Pearl Esther West, father Raymond Irvin West, daughter Tonya Jean Booker and other family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her son Tim McGee, her grandchildren Abbie Nelson (husband John Nelson), Jake McGee, Heather Darneal (husband Pat Darneal), Christine Biggers (husband Richard Biggers), Becki Simon (husband Jaron Simon), James Booker (Carlee Cornett), and Austen Book. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. (John Benjamin Nelson), (Alysssa, Zoey and Isabel Booker and McKenna), (Mason and Logan Simon), (Aiden, Hunter and Madison Darneal)
Her Celebration of life will be Wednesday, April 30th, 2025, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel; 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210. A visitation will be from 10 to 11 am, and a funeral service at 11 am. This will be followed by a graveside service at 12 pm at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
