Shirley Kennon Pruitt, 83, of 2837 Worsham Mill Road, Ruffin took her heavenly flight home on Friday, September 3, 2021, surrounded by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM, Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Warner officiating and the burial will follow at Mt Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at her home. (In consideration of their father, the family requests that everyone please consider social distancing and wear a mask).
Shirley was a native of Rockingham County and the daughter of the late Russel Hampton Kennon, Sr. and Clara Stone Kennon. She had a love for parties and entertaining… she always said, “the more people the merrier”. One of her sons-in-law told her that if it was a “RED LETTER” on the calendar, that she would come up with a reason to celebrate just so she could get us all together. We will greatly miss all those special times, but we have memories that we can cherish forever. Looking back, we think that her love for family, how much she enjoyed people, helping them when she could, led her to her career choices over her lifetime. In her early years she was a housewife and during the Christmas season she worked at Sears part-time. Everything she did in life involved meeting a lot of people. For the past 45 years she was the owner and operator of Kennon Mobile Home Park. Later she decided to open the Oregon Hill Mini Mart. She owned and operated the convenient store from 1991 to 2008. She was a charter member of Freedom Baptist Church, and she loved her pastor Ronnie Warner and his wife Diane. She adored everyone at the church. The last couple of years she missed going to the church and especially singing in the choir. We want to thank everyone in the church that went to her house to sing to her. This memory will always hold a special place in our hearts. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by brother Russell “PeeWee” Kennon, Jr.; and niece Ashely Dawn Kennon.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 64 years, David Pruitt; her daughters Janice Pinnix and husband Sherwood, Carol Hopkins and husband David and Wanda French and husband Mike; grandchildren Dillon Pinnix, Christopher French, and Skilarr Pruitt; nephew Mark Kennon; niece Renea Martin; special friends and caregivers Kim Shields, Wendy Jeffries, Jodi Isley, Jane Watkins, Beverly Moore, Wendy McPherson and Hospice of Rockingham County. We could not have made it through this journey without you. We also want to thank our Heavenly Father for allowing us to keep mom at home where she wanted to be.
