Shirley Van Horn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bell-Hennessy Funeral Home on Aug. 2, 2025.
Shirley A. Van Horn (née Romano), 77, of Franklinville, New Jersey, passed away after a brief illness on July 31, 2025. She was surrounded by her family.

Born on March 30, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Shirley was a proud graduate of Cardinal Dougherty High School. Her early years were marked by a vibrant spirit and a passion for life that never waned. She once rode her own motorcycle and found joy in working with ceramics-creative outlets that reflected her boldness and artistic flair.

She had worked in Philadelphia in the legal profession as a Word Processing Supervisor for many years.

Shirley dedicated herself to service in her community. She served as a Lieutenant in the Franklin Township Ambulance Corps where she was an EMT in Star Cross. She was also an active member of the Star Cross Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Her commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on those around her.

Shirley was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Peace Parish. She made pilgrimages to Medugorje and Betania. Malvern Retreat House was a place she enjoyed visiting. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life and brought comfort to many who knew her.

Family was at the heart of everything Shirley did. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Denise Clark and her husband Scott; Tracie Van Horn; and Vincent Van Horn and his wife Jackie. She was a proud grandmother to Andrew and Connor Van Horn. Shirley is also survived by her brother Don Romano (Alice) and sister Terri Romano. She had many loving nieces, nephews and godchildren as well.

She was predeceased by her brothers Ray Romano (Dottie) and David Romano.

Shirley's life was filled with cherished traditions and simple pleasures. In earlier years, she enjoyed camping with her family, including making mountain pies over the fire-a memory treasured by all who shared those moments with her. In more recent times, she delighted in trips "down the shore" to Ocean City, New Jersey; watching the Hallmark Channel; solving puzzle books; listening to Billy Joel and Andrea Bocelli; playing Racko-where she often emerged victorious-and savoring Wawa soft pretzels.

Her smile could light up any room, radiating warmth and kindness wherever she went. Nearly three decades ago, Shirley survived a stroke-a testament to her strength and resilience-and went on to live a fulfilling life that inspired everyone who crossed her path.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Tuesday, August 5th from 6:00 to 8"00 PM and Wednesday, August 6th from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Bell- Hennessy Funeral Home, 420 S. Main Street, Williamstown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Peace Parish/St. Mary's R.C. Church, Main Street and Carroll Avenue, Williamstown. Interment at All Saints Cemetery, Newfield.
