Shoel Cohen Obituary

Dr. Shoel Mark Cohen was born May 31,1941, and died March 1, 2023 at home in the loving presence of his wife Nancy, whose devotion and care sustained Shoel's life during a long illness. Shoel is also survived by his beloved son David and his wife Gloria, and their daughter Isabel, brother and sister in-law Avriel and Elyn, Shoel's daughter in-law Eileen and her children, Erin and Jack and his second daughter in-law Lori, Lori's huband Joseph, and their children Sarah, Tommy, and Rebecca, nephew Ari and his wife Lavinia, niece Elana and her husband Adam with their children Jacob and Nava.

Shoel was a loving and brilliant person who lived his adventurous life with boundless spirit and enthusiasm. He had many lifelong friends, especially, Bernie and Shep who were also professional colleagues, Barry, Gerry, and Joseph of the "Fearsome Foursome" dating back to his high school days in Hartford, and Eric Forsyth, his sailing partner from several robust expositions that spanned the globe.

Shoel was an avid sailor and loved his boats Psyche1 and Psyche 2. He sailed half way around the world with Eric on his boat the Fiona. Shoel also became a Dive Master. He loved to scuba dive with his brother and nephew, and took up hang gliding with his brother with whom he was very close. Shoel and Nancy loved their pets.

Shoel grew up in West Hartford and was in the Honor Society. He and his friend Joseph received Science Fair awards explaining and illustrating the development of a chicken and then successfully hatched one. Shoel was a talented violinist, guitar player, and singer and was the Concert Master of the Conard High School Orchestra. He graduated Conard in 1959 with honors and was recruited by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a BS and Master's degree in Psychology from MIT and a PhD in Physiological Psychology from Stony Brook at SUNY. He completed postdoctoral training in Clinical Psychology at Adelphi University. He became a clinical psychologist and a tenured Professor of Psychology at Nassau Community College teaching for 50 years. He cared deeply for his many patients and was a consultant at Brookhaven Community Hospital.

His charming personality, unbridled enthusiasm, and soaring intellect had a positive impact on all who knew him. He faced his disease with uncanny strength, courage, and a steely resolve that was extraordinary and inspiring. He will be greatly missed.

Shoel and I knew each other since elementary school and we were in the Cub Scouts together. We were great friends in high school as well. He was truly an intellectual giant in school and during his years at MIT. We played fun tennis with Joe and he was clearly a very athletic guy. I will miss you buddy !
