Sibyl Marguerite Dorsett Hicks

Sibyl Marguerite Carter was born in Ithaca, NY to Guyanese parents, Charles and Esther Carter on March 31st, 1947. She peacefully departed this life on October 28th, 2022 at her home in Greensboro, North Carolina. Sibyl grew up in Ithaca with her mother and older sister, Yvonne. She was an early pianist and always possessed a strong love for music. After graduating from Ithaca High School in 1965, Sibyl moved to Buffalo, New York, where she completed her college education at State University College at Buffalo (now known as SUNY Buffalo) in 1969. While in college she met her lifelong friend, Deborah Scott at Norton Hall at University of Buffalo. She also met her three fellow Musketeers Terry Humphrey (Chaka), Marilyn Evans (Johnson) and Kathy Bailey (Shakir) as well as her first husband, Duane Diggs. From this union, her pride and joy and only son Darren was born. She met and married her second husband, James C. Hicks, Jr. (Azujhon) and later birthed her baby girl and shining star, Sadio-Tene Hicks (Lloyd).
Sibyl taught in the Buffalo Public School System for 32-1/2 years at Clinton Junior High School, West Hertel Academy, School #60, retiring from McKinley High School. Her reputation was legendary tough but fair and committed to accepting nothing less than a student's best.
Sibyl had a side-hustle before it was popular always working more than one job. At one point, she was teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and Math to migrant farm workers in Lockport. For several years, she tutored students after school and at one point, worked in a group home. Because of her passion for teaching and dedication to the betterment of her students, there are thousands of young adults pursuing paths in every field of human endeavor who were each touched by her light.
In 2005, Sibyl shared the rare and a most beautiful experience of joining Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. with her daughter Sadio, making them not only mother and daughter but "sorority line sisters." She served several years with the Alpha Mu Sigma Chapter in Winston-Salem, NC. Later she completed years of service as a committed member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rebecca Chapter #656.
Sibyl is survived by her son Darren; daughter Sadio and son-in-law Lawrence; granddaughters Tesia, Surayya and Cadence; grandsons Lawrence II, Austin and Philip; great granddaughter Nalani; special cousin Joan; godchildren Brian Lowe and Maia Chaka; a host of other relatives; as well as her cherished adopted family including friends, colleagues and students. She was a second mother to many of her children's friends and her house was always full of love and a bunch of neighborhood kids. She was beloved by all who truly knew her and her style, sense of self and smile will be remembered always.
As her eternal light shines for all to see, we share the words of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, god-mother and friend, "Be Good To Yourself!"
The family will celebrate her life on Friday November 11th, 2022 from 1:30pm at LOVE AND FAITH CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP, 4344 Blackberry Rd, Greensboro, NC.
