Sidney Tenery Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hayes Funeral Home, Inc. on Jul. 28, 2025.
Reverend Sidney David Tenery passed away at the age of 81 on Friday, July 25, 2025, in Texas City.

Sidney was born July 23, 1944, in the small town of Encinal. At the very young age of 17, he took the leap of faith, marrying Barbara Ann (Elkins). Sharing 63 years of ups and downs together, they did it all. Their devotion to each other was one to be truly admired. He dedicated his life to faith, service, and hard work. Sidney answered the call to serve his country with honor as an E5, specializing as a heavy equipment operator in the United States Army, demonstrating steadfast commitment and discipline. After his military service, he worked on pipelines all over the U.S. as a heavy equipment operator. Then in 1972 he gave his heart and soul to Jesus at a Bobby Mankin Revival at FBC Markham, Texas, where Rev. Joe Ramsey was the pastor. Bro. Ramsey had been the minister at the small country church in Encinal where Sid grew up. In 1976 Sid would answer the call to the ministry. He would take another leap of faith by earning his Bachelor of Arts from East Texas Baptist University. His mission to touch others' lives, like God had done so much in his life, allowed him to continue his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he ultimately earned his Master of Arts in religious education. Sidney faithfully pastored several Southern Baptist churches throughout his life-including a congregation in Sargeant, Texas. He would retire from the ministry after 35+years of service, but he never quit soul-winning. He returned to the pipeline where he witnessed to other pipeliners about his Jesus and how his life had been changed. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow pipeliners, congregants, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Junilee (Patton) Tenery.

Survivors include his dedicated wife of 63 years, Barbara Ann (Elkins) Tenery who remained by his side through pipelining and pastoring congregations. She was and is his biggest supporter; daughters, June Conner and husband, David of Santa Fe, TX, Katherine Knight and husband, Travis of Texas City, TX; grandchildren, Amanda Hart of San Francisco, CA, Clayton Knight and wife, Sarah of Warren, MI, Brittney Goolsby of Pasadena, TX, Emily Goolsby of Houston, TX; great-granddaughter, Aubrey Madeline Knight of Warren, MI.

Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2025, with a funeral service immediately following beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501with Pastor Clayton Knight officiating. Interment will be at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.
