Carroll Wainwright Halsted
Carroll (aka CW, or Smiley) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the age of 84 in The Villages, Florida after a courageous 15 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved husband to Sharon, father to Tracey Halsted (Tim Jones), Cindy (Kyle) Poston, Jennifer (Kevin) Roskopf and Holly (Rick) Smirl. He was the proud Papa to his grandchildren: Jordan and Julia Gilbertson, Keegan, Chase and Hadley Poston, Lauren, Nathan Roskopf and Meghan Roskopf, Emma, Carter and Evelyn Smirl. He was also a step-Papa to Austin, Tatum and Roary Jones and Jonathon Gilbertson. Carroll is also remembered and loved by his nieces, nephews, and many, many incredible friends.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Grace Halsted, brothers Raymond, Victor and Richard and sister Marguerite Wood.
Carroll was born on June 15, 1937 in Warren, Illinois He graduated from Warren High School in 1955. He attended the Wisconsin Institute of Technology in Mining and Engineering (University of Wisconsin-Platteville) and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He also received a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Carroll also proudly served in the Army Reserves and was an avid supporter of the United States Military.
After college, Carroll began his lifelong career with the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT). He began his career working for the Highway Division in Waukesha, Wisconsin. While living in Waukesha, he met his lifelong love and friend, Sharon. They were married in April 1963 and built their first home in Waukesha. In 1984, he moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin where he finished his 41 year career with the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Carroll was very proud to be a civil engineer and was an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers (WSPE). He was also an active participant in Toastmasters. After retirement, Carroll and Sharon split their time between their cottage on Lake Lucerne near Crandon, Wisconsin and their home in The Villages, Florida. He loved spending time in both places where he built many cherished friendships.
Carroll had many passions including spending time with his family, golfing, cooking for friends and family, hosting Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers parties, traveling with friends and family, tiling and wood working projects, playing cribbage, investing in the stock market and sharing a good joke. He was also past President of the Lake Lucerne Lake Association and The Wisconsin Club in The Villages, Florida.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at CHURCH AND CHAPEL FUNERAL HOME, 380 Bluemound Rd, Waukesha, Wisconsin from 10:00 AM until the Memorial Service at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carroll's name to the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
Additional celebrations of life will be held in The Villages, Florida and Crandon, Wisconsin in 2022.
