It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we announce the passing of Songeun Grace Choi, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother. Songeun was born on August 29, 1961, in Seoul, South Korea, to the late Nam Bokjoo and Ju Yangsoon. She grew up with her family in the Mapo district of Seoul and began her lifelong journey of caring for others as the oldest of four siblings after the untimely passing of their mother. Her nurturing spirit would lead her to a fulfilling career in healthcare, where she was known for her compassion as a nurse practitioner.
After graduating from Seoul Girls' Commercial High School, Songeun worked as a reservation agent for Korean Air while attending night classes at Seoul Health College. It was during this time that she went on a group blind date (known in Korean as a "meeting"), during which she was randomly paired up with Inyeong Choi, a first year college student in biology. They were married in 1987. Soon after, Inyeong was admitted to a graduate program in the United States, and the two moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where their first child was born. Together, they raised three children, Franny, Brigid, and Paul, who continue her legacy of compassion, curiosity, and hard work. Songeun also found joy in being a grandmother, cherishing every moment with her one beloved grandchild, Daniel Jr.
Songeun studied at the pre-nursing program at Southern Connecticut State University and the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. Following her graduation in 2005, she worked as a Registered Nurse and cared for patients recovering from surgery at Emory University Hospital. She then earned an MSN at the Adult Primary Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Alabama and worked as a nurse practitioner for Georgia Long Term Care & Consulting, P.C. for twelve years, caring for patients in several long term care facilities in the Atlanta area.
A deeply spiritual woman, Songeun was a vibrant member of the Korean Martyrs Catholic Church, where she volunteered her time and efforts to uplift others in her community. She spent time in deep prayer and contemplation and traveled with her husband to religious sites in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and Israel. In her free time, she delighted in pottery, hiking, and gathering over food with friends and family, finding beauty in the simple pleasures of life. Her fierce determination, remarkable work ethic, and thoughtful nature inspired everyone around her, and her contributions will be felt for years to come.
Songeun departed this world on April 16, 2025 at her home in Decatur, Georgia, but her legacy of love and kindness will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. In celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel on April 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM. This gathering will offer the family and friends the opportunity to share cherished memories and honor Songeun's indelible spirit. A requiem mass will be held at Korean Martyrs Catholic Church the following week, at a time to be determined.
The family requests that remembrances be made in the form of donations to Kkottongnae Assisted Living Facility, a cause close to Songeun's heart, reflecting her commitment to aiding those in need.
As we celebrate Songeun Grace Choi, may we remember a woman whose life was devoted to caring for others, seeking beauty, and sharing the divine grace of God. Her radiant spirit will forever be a guiding light for us all.
