Sophia (Theodorakis) Herouvis passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, surrounded by her family. Sophia was the wife of the late Emanuel ‘Manoli’ Herouvis; loving mother of Angie (George) Voultepsis, Lemonia (Alex) Pastis, and Olga Herouvis; and devoted grandmother to Sophia, Gregory, and Evan. She was preceded in death by her sisters Olga Economos and Isabella Aivaliotis.
Sophia was born in Aliquippa, PA, in 1928 to Angeliki (Mougianis) and Xrysostomos Theodorakis of Ikaria, Greece. The family eventually moved back to Ikaria, where Sophia met her childhood love Manoli. They eventually married and raised their three daughters in Ikaria until the family immigrated to the U.S. in the 1960s. Sophia and her girls came first, staying with relatives in Cleveland where Sophia, not knowing the language, had the courage to seek employment, finding work at Higbee’s Department Store. When Manoli followed, the family settled in Verona, PA.
Sophia was a devoted wife and mother, and her door was always open to family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and you never left hungry after a visit.
Sophia was known for her soft-spoken, gentle nature, always speaking kindly of those she knew. She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and kept up to date with current events, keeping her mind sharp to the very end. Sophia’s encyclopedic memory was known to all. When you had a history question, you knew who to call. Overall, she was a woman of grace and incredible strength.
Sophia was a lifelong member of Chapter Icaros and enjoyed attending events and going on organized excursions with her fellow Ikarians. She especially enjoyed outings with her girlfriends, the late Caliope Gemelas and the late Maria Aivaliotis, affectionately known as the Three Amigos. But her greatest joy was spending time with her beloved children and grandchildren, who adored her.
She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
Friends and family will be received on Friday, February 27 from 4:00-8:00pm, with a Trisagion service at 7:30pm, at the Burket-Truby Funeral Home, 421 Allegheny Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 28 at 11:00am, at the Holy Dormition of Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 12 Washington Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139, with additional visitation held prior to the service from 10:00-11:00am. Interment to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
