Stacey Francis McGilvary peacefully transitioned from this life on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center in
Williamsburg, Virginia.
Born on September 29, 1963, in
Williamsburg, Virginia, Stacey was the beloved son of Hugh H. McGilvary, Sr. and Edna Jones McGilvary. He was raised in the Plum Point Community of New Kent, Virginia, where he attended and graduated from New Kent County Public Schools in 1982.
At an early age, Stacey confessed his life to Christ and became a member of St. Luke Baptist Church. His faith remained an important part of his life.
Stacey was a hardworking man who held several occupations throughout his life. He was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding, Simon Construction, and also detailed cars. Later, before his health began to fail, Stacey lovingly transported friends and family members to medical appointments, always willing to help however he could.
Stacey, affectionately known as "Big Stacey" "Bullet Proof" & "Paper Jean," had a heart of gold and a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was well known for his curly hair, bright smile, and his deep love for the Dallas Cowboys. You could often find him wiping down his cars, cruising slowly through the neighborhood while listening to old-school R&B, or enjoying time with friends.
His favorite pastimes included watching sports and old episodes of Martin, playing card games, dancing-especially his legendary move of turning around and hitting the floor-and, of course, eating. His family knew that when Stacey walked in, a plate should already be fixed and the microwave made available. He was also known for giving affectionate nicknames to his loved ones, such as "Muskrat," "Smurf," and "Peanut Head," which brought laughter and joy to family gatherings.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh McGilvary, Sr.; grandparents, Walter McGilvary and Willie Mae Blue, and Montaque and Ruth Jones; aunts, LaVinia Jennings, Jean Bellamy (Tom), Janie Green (Thenell), Vivian Walker, Naomi Robinson, and Sylvia Jones; uncles, Nathaniel (Eleanor), Willie Ward (Lucy), Walter McGilvary, Jr., Monroe McGilvary, Sr., Robert Lee McGilvary, Mason McGilvary, Sr., Leroy Johnson, Sr., Alvin Jones, and Elmore Walker, Sr.; and his sister-in-law, Cynthia "Tang" McGilvary.
Stacey leaves to cherish his memory his son, Stacey Norris; his loving mother, Edna "Morristeen" McGilvary; one sister, Sheila Akrie (Jeff); one brother, Hugh "Bubba" McGilvary, Jr.; one grandson, Kahlil Norris; nieces, Shelitha Akrie, Latisha Watson, Angel Washington (Perry), Lacey McGilvary, and Shatrice Akrie; nephew, Hugh McGilvary, III; great-nieces, Mikaela Jefferson, Leah Neale, Saraya Akrie, Ariana Holloway, Gabrielle Washington, Nyla Washington, and Camiyah Martin; loving aunts, Martha Johnson, Iris McGilvary, Agnes McGilvary, Alta McGilvary, and Doris McGilvary; best friend, Stafford Lewis; and a host of cousins, friends, and loved ones.
Stacey will be remembered for his kind spirit, generous heart, infectious smile, and the love he showed to his family and friends. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at Noon on Friday, December 19, 2025, at Whiting's Funeral Home with a viewing beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow in St. Luke Baptist Church Cemetery, Plum Point.
