Stefan (Steve) Brent Stackhouse, 71, of Black Mountain NC, passed from this life to eternity with Christ on May 3, 2023.
Steve was born in Kokomo, Indiana on December 30, 1951 to David and Shirley Pat Stackhouse. He was a graduate of Indiana University (BA, MBA) and the University of Pittsburgh (MLS).
His career began as Director of Administration for the Indiana Commission on Proprietary Education. He then spent a decade in college administration as Vice President of Finance, Minneapolis College of Art & Design; Dean of Finance, Hutchinson Community College (KS); and Vice President of Financial Affairs, Westmoreland County Community College (PA). Upon moving to NC, he held a MAHEC training position under a 2-year grant. Then, following a few years in real estate, he served as Finance Officer for the Town of Montreat from 2006-2017.
Steve and his wife Eunice (née Wonderly) met at Indiana University while both were pursuing graduate degrees and active in the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship chapter. They were married on July 2, 1977, and have been loving and mutually supportive spouses throughout these 45 years.
Steve was always active in his church and community, volunteering and holding leadership roles in numerous organizations. In Kansas, he served as President of a large Kiwanis Club. Here in NC, he served terms on the Black Mountain Town Planning Board (as Chair); Buncombe County Library Board; and his church Session (as elder). He founded the Montreat College Friends of Music in 2002, which was very active for a decade --significantly enhancing the cultural visibility and reputation of the college during that era. He served on the Black Mountain Lions Club board for several years, including a term as President; taught ESL for the Literacy Council of Buncombe County; initiated & coordinated French conversation Meet-ups in Asheville and Black Mountain; and grew and helped prepare food for Bounty and Soul. He was very involved in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNCA –taking many courses, serving on (or chairing) committees, and providing technical assistance to OLLI instructors for online learning during the pandemic.
Steve made a faith commitment to Jesus Christ in 1974, and throughout his adult life followed Jesus in personal discipleship. He has been a member of Christ Community Church-Montreat since 1999, and for the past 10 years led a small group Bible study. His unwavering faith throughout his 2-year struggle with cancer has been an inspiration to many. Friends are invited to view his Journal entries at CaringBridge.org under his name.
Stefan Stackhouse was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Pat Stackhouse. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Wonderly Stackhouse; his father, David William Stackhouse; an aunt, Paula Kresge; and five first cousins.
A memorial service will be held by Christ Community Church on Saturday, May 27th at 2:00 in Graham Chapel on the Montreat College campus. The chapel is located in Gaither Hall at 396 Geneva Place, Montreat, NC 28757. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Christ Community Church: P.O. Box 279, Montreat NC 28757.
