Stephen Eddie (Ed) Ball, of Vienna, left this world for his heavenly home on June 30th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Ed was born on November 18, 1946, to the late Oral L. “Bud” and Frances Ball, in Spencer, West Virginia.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judith A. Whitlatch Ball; his daughters, Kathy Hinkley (Joe), Mikki Bosley (Mike), and Kristin Holliday (Chad); and his brother, Jim Ball (Jennifer).
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Johnnie Williams; and his first wife, Carol Ann Ball.
A proud alumnus of Parkersburg High School, Class of 1964, Ed was an active member of the Big Red Band, A Cappella Choir, All-State Choir, and participated in the school’s production of Harvey. After high school, he attended West Virginia University, earning a degree in Zoology in 1969.
Ed began his professional career at Marbon/Borg Warner and later GE, where he served as Director of Human Resources and Safety for the Technical Building. He traveled the country promoting plastics and even authored a procedure manual for the plastics industry. After 33 years of dedicated service, Ed retired in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, innovation, and mentorship.
Faith was central to Ed’s life. He grew up attending North Parkersburg Baptist Church. After marriage, he became an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Parkersburg, serving on the Session and Board of Deacons and teaching Sunday School for many years. In recent years, he was a devoted member of Vienna Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of Trustees, Ushers, Sunday School teacher for the Adult Seekers Class, and was a member of the choir, often performing solos.
Ed was a member of Friends of Vienna and contributed to the research and publication of The First Book of Vienna. He also served on the Parkersburg High School Class of 1964 Reunion Committee.
Ed’s greatest joy came from being involved in his grandchildren’s lives—watching them participate in sports and supporting them in all they did. He was a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He lived life to the fullest and was always caring for others. Family meant everything to Ed—he treasured vacations, holidays, and cookouts, where he carried on the tradition of making homemade ice cream for everyone to enjoy.
An avid camper and traveler, Ed loved attending WVU bowl games and visiting Myrtle Beach. He was a passionate fan of West Virginia University, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and a devoted follower of Parkersburg South High School sports.
In addition to his immediate family, Ed is survived by his stepsons, Scott Miller (Brenda) and Stacy Miller (Kari); grandchildren Stephen Scohy, Danielle Scohy (Brad), Justin Bosley (Dalton), Megan Bosley (Cooper), Brandon Holliday, and Dylan Holliday (Leah); step-grandchildren Darienne Miller Stephens (Drake), Brody Miller, and Chase Marra; great-grandchildren Connor and Owen Smith; step-great-grandchild Hunter Stephens; aunts Wanda Holland (Rolland) and Betty Surface; brother-in-law David Williams; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Ed also leaves behind his beloved pooch, Marley.
Ed will be remembered for his warmth, humor, unwavering faith, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and compassion.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Orton Armstrong, Dr. Sabir Hussein, Dr. Jeffrey Ryckman, and the medical team at Amedisys Home Health Care for their compassionate care and support during Ed’s illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Parkersburg Post 15 American Legion Baseball, the Parkersburg High School A Cappella Choir, and Vienna Baptist Church Choir in memory of Ed.
