Stephen Brown Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Reed-Egan Funeral Home - Newark on May 16, 2025.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen "Steve" Robert Brown, 82, of Newark, will be held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 21, 2025, with Fr. Anthony Lonzo as celebrant. Inurnment in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Newark, will be held at a later date.
Born in Coshocton County on May 17, 1943, to the late Leland Emerson and Helen Mattie (McNabb) Brown, Steve held many fond memories of his time living on the farm. He was a 1961 graduate of Licking Valley High School and served his country as a member of the Army Reserves and Ohio National Guard.
Steve worked as a maintenance machinist at Owens Corning Fiberglas for 35 ½ years and was a proud member of Local 1280 IAMAW. In retirement, Steve spent 5 years working as a bailiff with the Licking County Grand Jury, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
For many decades, Steve was a tireless servant of the Newark Catholic community dedicating countless hours of his time. He led the initiative and amassed a team of volunteers to help on many projects at the football field. He enthusiastically supported all of the athletic teams over the years traveling to endless events to cheer on the Green Wave. For this exemplary contribution of service, Steve was presented with the "Respect the Game" State Award from the Ohio High School Athletic Association, and was a 2023 Newark Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame Award of Merit Inductee.
As an avid MOPAR and car enthusiast, Steve enjoyed traveling to car shows, visiting National Trails Raceway, and talking with others about his 1962 Dodge Dart. He had an intentional wit and loved to get a laugh from others.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen (Annecillo) Brown; daughter, Meghan Svatora; grandchildren, Andrew and Anna Svatora; sister, Lynne (Ronald) McLeish; several nieces and nephews; and in his own words, "many great friends, fellow workers, old car friends, all of whom I feel lucky to have."
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his son, Jared Stephen; and grandson, John Stephen.
Calling hours will be held at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark Ohio, 4-7 P.M., Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Memorials in Steve's name can be made to the Newark Catholic High School Foundation, 1 Green Wave Drive, Newark, Ohio 43055. https://www.newarkcatholic.org/Support/NCHS-Foundation/#NCHS-Foundation-6

Saddened to hear of the passing of Steve. He was a true gentleman who was liked and respected by all. He will especially be missed by the Newark Catholic community. His love of all things Newark Catholic and his hard work in many of its activities helped make it the great school it is today. He truely bled Green. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May he rest in peace. With heartfelt sympathy,

Cindy and Wes Poth

I feel like I knew Steve and had not personally met him. For years my brother, Jim Helms, has shared with me stories of their road trips to N. C. games and their work at the field, and believe me, there was always humor involved. My brother shared a special friendship with Steve and shared that with me in conversation. I know Steve left a lofty legacy and I offer my sincere sympathy to his score of friends and to his loving family.

Brown family,

Steve was a good friend all through my High School days at Licking Valley. So sad to learn of his passing but I know he is with the Lord. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in Peace my Good Friend.
