Stephen James Caldwell (Steve), 76, of Flora, Mississippi, passed away on April 21, 2025 at his home, surrounded in the love of his family and friends. He was born on August 31, 1948 in Jackson, Mississippi.
He is survived by his wife, Melba Johnson Caldwell of Flora, MS, children Brad Caldwell of Houston, TX, John Caldwell of Portland, OR, Eric Caldwell of Arlington, TX, Ryan Caldwell of New Orleans, LA, Catherine Will of Lone Tree, CO, his sister Rosemary Caldwell White of Jackson, MS, and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Cornelia Childress Caldwell, his mother and father, Richard Gladen Caldwell and Mary Louise Caldwell, and his brothers Gary Caldwell and Dale Caldwell.
Steve attended Flora High School, and played trumpet in the school band, the Mississippi Lions All State Band, and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. He served in the Air Force and was a member of the band during his years of service. He attended Millsaps College, earning his degree in Chemistry. He spent most of his career working for the Dow Chemical Corporation in Plaquemine, LA and later at the Dow headquarters in Midland, MI.
Steve was known for his patience, kindness, inquisitiveness, and his seemingly never-ceasing wealth of knowledge. Steve could repair almost anything and often extended his talents to help friends, neighbors, and strangers in need.
In retirement, Steve rekindled his love of music, practicing his trumpet almost every day. When not playing the trumpet, he could be found building and flying radio control airplanes or working on gardening projects.
Steve was the most loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will continue to inspire his family with his love of learning and patient spirit.
