Obituary published on Legacy.com by McHoul Funeral Home, Inc. - Hopewell Junction on May 26, 2024.
Steve Calleran, cherished husband, father, and friend, beloved fixture of the theater community in and around Westchester County, NY, accomplished actor and entertainer, and certified jack-of-all-trades, passed away suddenly on May 22, 2024, at the age of 75 after a beautiful day of tennis, gardening, and lending a hand to those around him.
Steve was born on September 1, 1948, in Norfolk, VA, the son of the late James and Ruth (Roth) Calleran. Steve is survived by the luckiest family on earth, including his wife, Jeanne, his children Brynne and Lindsay, Brynne's partner Faizan and their son Evren Zaynne. He is also survived by his brother James E. Calleran, Jr. and his wife Saundra, his sister Mary Ann and her husband Edward Collins, his brother-in-law Leo Taggart, sisters-in-law Anne Cunningham, Mary Fanning (Mark), and Cynthia Taggart, and many treasured nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A resident of
Wappingers Falls, NY since 2019, Steve was formerly of Shrub Oak, where you'd have surely seen him busily strolling through his yard on E. Main Street with a rake and a mug of coffee. The "man in the tux" brought his many gifts to the Westchester Broadway Dinner Theater for over 40 years. He was a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and Actor's Equity, appearing in 200+ television commercials and countless stage productions, working opposite everyone from Austin Pendleton to Howard Stern to Bart the Bear.
On May 4th, 1979, the most charmed day of his life, Steve married Jeanne Taggart, whom he loved more than anything. In addition to being his north star and his biggest fan, Jeanne ("Bunny") was his antiquing buddy, his partner in tv binge-watching, and his best friend. Steve often filled in the gaps for Jeanne's historically spotty memory: demonstrating for her the showgirl choreography she'd forget during their time spent together in regional theater, correcting her comically jumbled idioms, and teaching (and re-teaching) her how to use the Roku-all of which he adored doing. Lindsay and Brynne inherited Jeanne's questionable memory but will spend a lifetime recounting Steve's cherished stories as best they can.
Brynne and Lindsay were Steve's heart and soul, and he found purpose every day in supporting them. Their artistry moved him in ways he never hesitated to express, whether it was singing backup vocals and setting up equipment for one of Brynne's shows or collaborating with Lindsay on a film and discussing excitedly all the details of a shoot, Steve was consistently humbled by Brynne and Lindsay's creative work. His memory lives on in every ounce of their pursuits, of which he will no doubt watch with unmatched fervor and enthusiasm.
Most recently, you could find Steve working on various writing projects, giving belly rubs to any dog that allowed it (especially his grandfurbaby Stella), and teaching his adored baby grandson, Evren, how to sign "Pop-Pop". In true Steve fashion, he exited stage left only after re-stocking the paper towels, hanging a foolproof air filter changing schedule, washing, and folding the sheets, filling the car with gas, and fully vetting his grandson's new nanny (naming her cats after "Peaky Blinders" characters sealed the deal).
Steve's greatest joy was helping others. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that you "pull a Steve" and perform an act of kindness or generosity in his memory. They'd love to hear what you do. Please send stories to
