Steve thank you for all the music you shared with me that got me through many miles training for my ultras. I know you´re spinning away pain free to all the best tunes. Condolences to your family

My condolences, I was Steve´s personal trainer for a time. He was hardworking and such a great guy to work with. He had so many stories he shared about running and his travels. It saddens me to hear the news of his passing.

So sorry to hear of Steve´s passing. He was the first person I met who had run 100 miles, and talked me into my first pacing experience at western states where we both paced Cath from the UK. He was kind and encouraging, and I have fond memories of him, he´ll be missed.

I had the privilege to become friends with Steve while he was a member of the Steven Creek Striders. He also became a client as I massaged many of the runners in that club. He was always very humble and a gentle soul and I will always remember his passion for trying to keep running as his illness progressed. Godspeed Steve

I will always remember Steve as my running buddy. In 89 I was on assignment from IBM Germany working at Steve´s employer. Steve convinced me to go running in the hills with him every day. After the summer we thought we needed a goal and decided we both wanted to do the Berlin marathon as soon as I was supposed to be back in Germany. Well, my assignment went a little longer and I couldn´t make it back to Berlin. But Steve went and ran the marathon. I believe that started his passion for long runs.

Rest In Peace my old friend.
Heinz

My condolences to Steve's family. He was a supportive member of the ultra-running community and a fun-loving good person. He was one of the first ultra-runners I met back in the late 90's in the Palo Alto Run Club. He paced me on my first 50 mile run. I miss talking about our shared love of music. RIP, Steve.

Steve - we first met at the Swiss Alpine Marathon, and from there, we shared many adventures. Several times we flow across the Atlantic to see each other. You introduced me to the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, and you paced me to my first finish - I would never have made it without you. A few years later, you waited for me at the altar of a small church in southern Sweden. And yet another few years later, I was sitting on a train, following you online as you were running for that Western States belt buckle that you wanted so much - and you got it! Now you have crossed your final finish line. I´m with you in thought, and I wish you peace.

So very sorry to hear this news. Steve was a great guy and this is a bit of a shock given his running adventures. We met in Burlingame running club. He was a sweet person and talented athlete. So sorry for your loss. He is in your (and my) hearts. - Diane Kauffman

I had the pleasure of getting to know Steve through trail running in California (Palo Alto Run Club, Stevens Creek Striders - and different running & racing adventures) and was happy to stay in touch with him afer I moved to Germany. (Photo here is in Freiburg, Germany, in 2016). When I think of Steve I think of his love for nature/running/travel/ adventure, and also his love of languages (French, German, likely more!) Rest in peace Steve - I will always think of you with your smile at the WS100 finish (the photo at the top of this page).

I was one of the lucky people who Steve helped to complete the Western States 100. I was timed out at 85 miles in 2006 and for the next year Steve encouraged me and helped my preparations. He even roped in Claire as my pacer through the night scetion. He crossed the river with me, followed me around and saw me to the finish. He was a decent and thoroughly lovely man, who will be much missed. Cath Worth (GB)

Steve introduced me to Zaz, and it encouraged me to start to learn French (mais je suis encore débutant!). He came to New York and we went to see Zaz together in her first American show. Had a great dinner, two bottles of wine... Rest in peace, mon ami.
