Steve Finneron, 75, of
Killington, VT, passed away peacefully at RRMC on Monday evening, December 1st, after a long and courageous battle with ALS. He faced his illness with remarkable strength and grace, surrounded by the unwavering love of his family and friends.
Steve and his wife of 43 years, Sheila, are blessed with two children whom he adored-Meaghan and her fiancé Matt, and Kyle and his wife Kara. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Jerry Horgan and Joe Thibodeau, whose memories he held close. Steve leaves behind his loving sisters, Joan Horgan and Mary Beth Thibodeau; his brothers Barry and his wife Karyn, Brian and his wife Patty, and Sean and his wife Paula. He will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews who brought him great joy throughout his life.
Born on October 3, 1950, in
Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Steve grew up attending St. Bernard's schools and graduated from Fitchburg State College with a degree in Education. A proud member of the Mohawk Fraternity, he carried the warmth and loyalty of those lifelong brothers in his heart every day.
In 1973 he moved to Vermont, and Steve never left. He arrived in Killington having never skied before and later became a ski instructor at Killington Resort, bringing his athletic grace, endless patience, and contagious joy to generations of skiers. For over 40 years he was a Hopefuls coach at the Killington Ski Club, becoming the gentle, legendary "old guy" who taught the children of his very first students-always with a smile and a story.
A skilled and passionate contractor, Steve built many of the homes that give Killington its mountain charm. Later he poured that same talent and heart into decades of service at Edgemont Condominiums, where he was cherished as much for his kindness as for his dedication.
Steve embraced Vermont life with his whole heart: tapping maple trees in his own sugarbush, boiling sap into golden syrup, and then sharing that magic every spring with Killington's fourth graders. Countless kids-and now their parents-still light up when they remember "Mr. Finneron" teaching them the history, science and craft of turning springtime sap into this cherished vermont liquid gold.
His calm wisdom, steady strength, and quiet humor made him a natural leader. He served with distinction on the SES/KES School Board and later brought the same thoughtful presence to multiple terms on the Killington Select Board, always putting community first.
Beyond the slopes, Steve loved golf, and nowhere made him happier than his neighborhood course, Green Mountain National.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the extraordinary nurses and staff on the 5th floor at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Your compassion, skill, and gentle kindness wrapped Steve-and all of us-in care and dignity during his final days. You are angels in scrubs, and we will never forget you.
A celebration of Steve's remarkable life and a burial at Riverside Cemetery in Killington will be held in the spring, when the mountains he loved are green again.
