Stephen D. Hill

Stephen D. Hill, age 75, of Rensselaer, Indiana, passed away on March 26, 2026, at the Rensselaer Care Center. He was born on September 30, 1950, to Richard and Willamae (Laymon) Hill, who preceded him in death.

Stephen graduated from Gavit High School in Hammond, Indiana, with the Class of 1968. He married the love of his life, Margaret F. Schaller, on November 14, 1970, in Crown Point, Indiana, and she survives.

Stephen worked as a meat cutter for many years with Howard & Sons Meats, where he also served as co-owner of the South Holland, Illinois location. He was a member of Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church in Wheatfield, the meat cutter's union, and American Legion Post #29. Stephen was also a dedicated past Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed deer hunting at Uncle Herb's property and fishing trips to Sullivan, Indiana.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hill; his children, Richard (Shelly) Hill of Rensselaer, Tracy (Keith) Swatek of Channahon, Illinois, Craig (Jody) Hill of DeMotte, Indiana, and Jennifer (Sean Murphy) Hill-Orzechowicz of Rensselaer; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lisa (Dale) Den Hartog of Dyer, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Scott Hill; and his son, Kurtis Hill.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CT at Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. CT, with Deacon Joe VanSchepen officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Cemetery of the Resurrection in DeMotte, Indiana, at a later date.
