Stephen Hughes Obituary

Stephen R. Hughes

Roebuck, SC

Stephen Ray Hughes, 68, surrounded by his family and friends, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1957, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of Betty Jo Knighton Hughes and the late Hugh Arvin Hughes of Enoree.

Steve was born and raised in Enoree and graduated Woodruff High School in 1975. Having played football in the "Willie" Varner Era of Woodruff High School Football he was extremely proud to be a Woodruff Wolverine. The grit and drive learned from those years no doubt influenced the next phase of his life when enlisting into the United States Army in 1976. Being the definition of Army Strong, Steve's Military Education was in the Basic Airborne division as a paratrooper. He was a Green Beret, Army Special Forces, with Overseas Assignments in the United Kingdom and Korea. One of the greatest honors of his life was serving the country that he loved so dearly.

A hard worker all his years, Steve was formerly employed for over 40 years with W.R. Grace and Specialty Vermiculite. He was an avid deer and turkey hunter and loved being in the great outdoors. He was a past lodge master of Enoree Masonic Lodge #222 and attended First Baptist Church of Woodruff.

Steve fiercely loved the Lord, his country, and his friends and his family.

Surviving in addition to his mother is his loving wife, Kim Richards Hughes, the two of which had recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, his daughter Emma Hughes Jauch (Michael) of Chapin, son, Colt Hughes (Jordan) of Pauline; sisters Rhonda Cox (Phil) of Woodruff, Christie Simmons of Enoree; honorary brother, Mitchell Powers of Enoree and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, Parker Jauch, Molly Anne Jauch, and Georgia Kate Hughes who brought so much joy and comfort to him in recent years.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Monday, February 16th, 2026, at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary with Rev. Andrew Shull officiating. Interment with military honors and Masonic Rites will follow in First Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers, Colt Hughes, Michael Jauch, Trevor Richards, Jimmy Johnson, Charles Johnson, Dylan Wood, Ryan Theo, Graham Lawson and Jacob Prince. Honorary Pallbearers, Kenny Burch, Jeff Wood, Mitchell Powers, Tommy Smith, Shannon Littlefield, Owen Osteen and Mark Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Woodruff, 801 Cross Anchor Road Woodruff, SC 29388.

Family members are at the home.
