It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Stephen Lynn (Appayette) LaCour on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Stephen Lynn LaCour was born on April 24, 1959, in Lawton, Oklahoma. He played football and basketball for Carnegie High School, Carnegie, Oklahoma. From 1977 through 1979, he played basketball for Haskell Jr. College, Lawrence, KS. After college, he played independent basketball competing in non-tribal and tribal tournaments in different states. Stephen LaCour was inducted into NIAA Hall of Fame for his leadership, athleticism, and sportsmanship. Stephen was a devoted father and husband who provided for his family until his retirement from Haskell Jr. College as a facility manager in 2024.
Stephen LaCour is a direct descendant of Chief Stetainte (White Bear) His maternal grandmother, Margaret (lkei-gope) Oyebi-Methvin was reared by Chief Stetainte's son, Odlepaugh and his wife, Ananthy, in Saddle Mountain, Oklahoma.
Stephen LaCour leaves behind two sons: Stephen (Knowes) LaCour, Jr., and Evan William (Chalko) LaCour of the home. Four sisters: Lanita Jo Horse, Vonda Jewell LaCour, Danna Michelle LaCour, and Justina Biffle. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Jessepe LaCour, brother, David Duke LaCour, father, Emile Joseph (Sonny) LaCour, mother, Lula Grace (Methvin) LaCour, maternal grandparents, William and Margaret (Oyebi) Methvin, paternal grandparents, Emile and Mary LaCour. Stephen's kindness and affection will be greatly missed by his nephews, nieces, grandkids, and relatives.
A morning service will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 10:00 AM at 120 West 13th Street, Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence, Kansas. Immediately following the service, Stephen LaCour will be transported to the Jessepe homestead upon the Kickapoo Reservation for burial services and lay to rest the following morning.
