Stephen Miller, a pioneering figure in the world of strength and conditioning, passed away September 29, 2025 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and mentorship. As the second individual ever inducted into the Oklahoma Olympic Weightlifting Hall of Fame, Stephen's contributions to the sport were both historic and deeply influential.

Before pursuing higher education, Stephen proudly served his country as a United States Marine, a chapter of his life that aligned with his strong sense of discipline and resilience. Following his service, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education from the University of Oklahoma, where he was also a proud member of the OU Weightlifting Club. His passion for athletics ran deep from an early age. He ran cross country in high school and developed a lifelong interest in physical fitness and movement.

A highly accomplished coach, Stephen was among the elite few in the United States to achieve the status of USA Weightlifting Level 5 coach. His journey began with a diverse background in martial arts and combat sports, including a competitive career in kickboxing under the guidance of a direct student of Bruce Lee. His pursuit of discipline and self-mastery also led him to spend time in a Buddhist monastery while in Okinawa.

While stationed in Hawaii, Stephen trained under legendary two-time Olympic gold medalist Tommy Kono, who was widely considered one of the greatest American weightlifters of all time. He also spent six weeks at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, working alongside Team USA and sharpening his skills among the nation's best.

More than just a career, working out was Stephen's personal passion. He spent virtually every day of his life inside a gym, lifting, training, and inspiring others to reach their full potential. His love for fitness and his dedication to helping others build strength, both physically and mentally, defined him. Coaching was not just what he did, it was who he was.

Throughout a remarkable 36-year coaching career, Stephen mentored numerous elite athletes, including two-time Olympians Chad Vaughn and Shane Hamman, World competitor Jacklyn Beed, Youth Olympic Games athlete Jessica Beed, and Olympic and World Champion Galabin Boevski, who holds the highest Sinclair score ever recorded.

Stephen also served for many years as president of the Oklahoma Local Weightlifting Committee, organizing dozens of Olympic weightlifting events across the Oklahoma City metro area. His impact reached beyond lifting platforms. He remained active in martial arts and worked with several professional fighters, including former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner.

Outside of the gym, Stephen had a wide range of interests. He loved fishing, classic rock music, and had a creative side, playing both the violin and the guitar as a child. These passions added depth to a man already known for his discipline and strength.

His client list was long and diverse, ranging from Olympic hopefuls to everyday individuals seeking strength and guidance. Stephen was known for his deep knowledge, unwavering encouragement, and the respect he earned from peers and athletes alike. He was respected by many, and loved by all.

He is survived by his children: Deziree Miller, Daniella Miller, Diana Miller, Nell Pierce, Zachary Miller, and Zoey Miller; as well as his beloved grandchildren: Sebastian Ortiz, Valentin Menis, Nicole El Abdala Miller, Isabella Menis, Nicolas Ortiz, and Omar El Abdala Miller. Stephen is also survived by his brother, David Soliday.

He was preceded in death by his father, Griffith Miller; his mother, Mae Tinsley; and his sister, Barbara Sparks.

Stephen's life was defined by hard work, quiet strength, and a passion for helping others reach their fullest potential. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
