Steve was the oldest of 6 kids borne by Katherine
(Katie) Thorp (Palmer) and is survived by:
Son Stephen E. Palmer (Stevie)
Daughter, Sandra G. Palmer (Sandy)
(2) Grandkids, (4)Great-Grandkids
Ex-wife, Darlene Palmer (Cavanaugh)
Brother, Delbert W. Thorp
(And a host of neighberhood kids 'adopted' by his
mom and loved by all in the Clan, Ruth Ann,
Travis, La La, Football, Robin)
Steve attended Manual High School where he
developed his drafting and woodworking skills,
and took a job at Vermont American (Aerican Saw
and Tool) as a draftsman. Taking advantage of
their continuing education program, Steve earned
an Associate of Mechanical Engineering degree
and continued working with Vermont American
for just over 19 years. After separating from
Vermont American Steve continued to share his
skills with several manufacturing and engineering
firms in the Louisville area and supplemented his
income by working in private security until he
found a 'home' in a position as a driver for TARC
(Transit Authority of River City) in 2000. Steve
continued there until health issues led to his
retirement in 2012.
Steve volunteered with the Boy Scouts Troop 19
when he lived in Highland park, sharing his love
for fishing, camping and training the boys in the
life skills they would need.
Steve also enjoyed his Siberian Huskies Sam and
Misty, training Sam in obedience and taking him
all the way to the state champsionships. Sharing
this adventure with his son led Stevie to a lifelong
love of raising and working with dogs.
Steve was an avid reader, devoring every western,
early sci-fi/adventure book he (and his brother-
Delbert, whom he had taught to read even before
Delbert started school) could find in the new/used
bookstores in 3 states. When reading became
difficult for Steve, he switched to DVD/Blu-Rays
and expanded his search to include every
Disney/Dreamworks work (even Animi), favorite
tv shows and actors collections, and whateve he
thought the kids would enjoy, overwhelming his
apartment with bookcases.
Steve discovered computers when he got a
Commadore 64 and then empire building games
on his DOS computer, spending days mastering
each game and sharing his skills (and computer)
with all the kids in his life.
From chasing the boys with a rubber knife and
wresling them to the ground, to turning into the
Tickle Monster and chasing the girls screaming
through the house, from loading up the john boat
with as many kids as possible to renting a
pontoon boat for a fishing/swimming weekend,
from loading up his car with any available
niece/nephew/brother/sister/neighbor kid for a
movie and a hr at the theaters arcade to grabbing
the older kids for a run at the go carts to target
shooting, from grabbing a bite at the burger joint
to sponsoring a Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner for
everyone who could make it, Steves greatest joy
was engaging with the family and watching the
kids grow and play.
With this in mind, Steve would ask "No Flowers,
just take the time to be with the kids, be with the
family"
