Stephen (Steve) Rao Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2026.
scottsdale - Stephen (Steve) Rao passed away on February 1, 2026. Born in Albany, New York, to Italian immigrant parents; Joseph S. & Mary S Rao. Steve was the youngest of three boys and was known from an early age for his warmth, humor and devotion to family and friends.

Steve attended Christian Brothers Academy, where he played football and formed lifelong friendships. During his senior year, he met the love of his life, Lynda, beginning a bond at age 18 that would last a lifetime.

He attended Columbia University on a football scholarship and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Architecture. While at Columbia, he worked at a local pizzeria and developed a passion for making pizza which he shared with family and friends for the next 50 years. An invitation for one of his pizza parties was highly coveted.

Steve and Lynda married in 1979 and moved to Arizona, where Steve attend Arizona State University and received his Master degree in Architecture-Energy Efficient Design. He began his career at Ken Allison & Associates. Later he worked at DWL Architects + Planners, making significant contributions to major aviation and sports facilities, including Phoenix Sky Harbor Terminal 4 Concourse and Terminal 3 Modernization, as well as the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants training facilities. He served as President of DWL from 2009 to 2020 and was widely respected for his leadership, mentorship, and collaborative spirit. He also served on the Board of Directors for Support Sky Harbor Coalition.

Above all, Steve's greatest joy was his family. A devoted husband and loving father, he cherished every moment with his sons, Michael and Derek-coaching their teams, attending every game, and taking immense pride in their lives and accomplishments.

Steve will be remembered for his generous heart, unwavering devotion to Lynda, and ability to bring people together through laughter, conversation, or a perfectly made pizza. For those who knew Steve best, they will remember his quick wit, disarming charm & carefree nature. If he wasn't on a walk with Lynda you could find him remodeling and building around the house.

Steve is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lynda Rao; his sons Michael Rao and Derek (Holly) Rao; brothers Joseph M Rao (Mickey) and John Rao; sister Johanna Heredia; and many loving nieces, nephews, and granddogs. He was preceded in death by his beloved older brother Charles Rao.

Steve Rao

I was so sorry to see that Steve passed away, I grew up with Chuck, Mickey, and Steve when they lived on Grant Ave. I remember all the good times we had playing baseball in the school yard, that was 3 doors down from where they lived on Grant Ave and his Dads body shop was behind their house, over 60 years ago. I didn´t stay in touch once the family moved, I would run into Chuck from time to time. Chuck´s children played with my daughters for a while before he and Elizabeth moved away. It sounds like Steve had a great life and a loving family.

Lynda,
Although we in Albany could not attend today's memorial, know that we were there and watching. Stevie was a fun cousin. He loved my mother's chocolate cake with marsh mellow frosting, the family holidays where we played games, laughed, ate and he loved to be in photos. I sent a few a while back and got a wonderful note from Stevie in return. He was loving, gentle, kind , a wonderful man. May he rest in peace. I'm sure he and Chuckie are playing football in heaven.
