Stephen Eric Sandstrom
March 18, 1964 – December 2, 2025
Stephen Eric Sandstrom lived a life of extraordinary adventure, service, and devotion. He is survived by his mother, three siblings, four children: Afton (Bryan) Coleman, Jesse (Abigail) Sandstrom, Reagan (Sarah) Sandstrom, and Haydn Sandstrom, and nine grandchildren: Astrid, Agnes, Adelaide, Lillian, Leif, Artemis, Fitz, Lars, and Pippa - all of whom he loved deeply. He is now reunited in heaven with his dad, and sister.
Stephen never waited for life to happen. He earned his pilot's license the day he turned 17, later owning his own aircraft and logging tens of thousands of hours in the sky. He served an LDS mission in Venezuela and proudly served his country as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
His adventurous spirit took him around the world - from climbing in the Himalayas and the Andes, to hunting on the plains of Africa and in the mountains of Alaska. He captained his own boat into the Caribbean, taking his family on unforgettable month-long voyages with them as his crew.
Stephen was also a dedicated public servant. He spent 12 years on the Orem City Council and 5 years in the Utah State Legislature, working tirelessly for his community.
Professionally, he built a successful career in architecture, designing and overseeing construction of buildings across the Mountain West - especially schools that will serve generations to come. At both the beginning and end of his career, he returned to his passion for flying as a commercial pilot.
Of all his accomplishments, Stephen's greatest joy was his family. Being a father and "Pompa" to his grandchildren meant more to him than any title or achievement. In recent years, he made his home in his favorite place on earth - Longboat Key, Florida - where he welcomed a steady stream of family to join him in building sandcastles, fishing, and sipping pina coladas by the water.
Stephen left a profound mark on the world and on the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed - especially by his children and grandchildren, who will carry his legacy of courage, adventure, and love forward.
