Stephen Winfrey Obituary

Stephen Foster Winfrey, known lovingly by those close to him as "Big Steve," "The President," and "The Silver Fox," passed away on March 22, 2026, in Oakland, California. Born on July 8, 1944, in Oklahoma, Steve lived a life defined by generosity, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to the people he loved.

Steve was married to his wife, Michele Winfrey, for 48 wonderful years, a partnership built on love and steadfast commitment. He was a proud father who cherished every moment with his children. Steve built a remarkable career as a bus driver for AC Transit, where he earned an extraordinary 40-year safe driving award, a testament to the dedication and reliability that defined everything he did.

Steve had a way of lighting up a room. He was funny, kind, authentic, and had a heart of gold. Whether he was casting a line on a quiet morning of fishing, cheering on the Giants, the A's, the 49ers, or Cal Berkeley Football, or watching the ponies run at Golden Gate Fields, Steve knew how to enjoy life and bring others along for the ride.

In retirement, Steve found great joy working as a yard supervisor at Fairmont Elementary School, where his warmth and humor made him a beloved figure among students and staff alike. He was a proud Mason and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His faith and his commitment to his community were guiding lights throughout his life.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Winfrey; his mother, Irene Winfrey (Ray); and his sister, Bobbie Trip. He is survived by his devoted wife, Michele; his daughters, Stephanie May, Jennifer Altheide, and Christina Sillett; his sons, Ryan Winfrey and James Winfrey; and his sisters, Debbie Culp and Nancy Meadors.

Steve was a rare human. He was generous, kind, funny, and loving. He left everyone he met better than he found them. The world is a little quieter without him, but so much richer for having known him.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Steve's honor on Sunday, April 12th, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, 5050 El Portal, Richmond, California. All who knew and loved Big Steve are welcome to gather, share stories, and celebrate a life beautiful lived.
