STEVE BENA Cedar Rapids Steve Bena, 78, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. A visitation will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2021, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A private family service will be held. Steve was born on Dec. 8, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Lumir and Florence (Schissel) Bena. He graduated from Jefferson High School and went on to attend the University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College. He was united in marriage to Linda Kay Schulte on Nov. 18, 1967, in Norway, Iowa. He was honored to serve his country while in the Navy, and his city for 32 years with the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. He was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Steve enjoyed traveling, trips to the casino, cooking, fishing, and watching racing. Most of all, Steve loved spending time with family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Linda Bena of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Tami (Jody) Altenhofen of Walford, Iowa, and Jodi (David) Zahner of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Lynsey Altenhofen, Matthew Altenhofen, Emily Zahner and Zak Zahner; and sister, Mary (Robert) Zweigart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lumir and Florence Bena. Memorials may be directed to the family, which will be used to support Steve's favorite charities.
