Steve Benedict

Steven M. Benedict, 63, passed away at home with loved ones by his side on May 7, 2025, after a courageous 5-year journey with esophageal cancer. Steve was born on February 22, 1962, in Aberdeen Proving Grounds Military Base, MD to Kathryn (Traynor) and Roger Benedict. He was a 1980 graduate of Rockford Public Schools.

Steve worked for Cardinal Glass Company for almost 40 years. He liked the independence of driving his truck throughout southern WI and northern IL. Steve loved Rockford, loved life, loved music and enjoyed lifelong hobbies of golfing, bowling, fishing, and gardening. He was an amazing golfer, and member of the CDGA. As a talented bowler, he scored a few 800 games, and several 300’s. His work and hobbies led to great friendships and much happiness. He couldn’t get enough of this big, beautiful world. As an avid thrifter, Steve couldn’t pass up a good thrift store or estate sale. Other sources of joy were Steve’s special brother David, and partner for life of 17 years, Rae Ann Walters. Steve and Rae shared a love for their home and sweet dog, Ava, a constant companion.

Steve was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears. He remembered every detail of their games when recapping them with his dad, brother, and friends. He was a proud owner of one of Ernie Banks’ golf balls and traveled to get it signed!

Steve is survived by his partner, Rae Ann Walters; father, Roger Benedict (Paula Christensen); brother, Dave Benedict (Ivette Pavez); aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Kathryn Traynor.

A celebration of Steve’s life will take place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a service at 11 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road.
