I am sorry to hear the news. I did know until two days ago. I sure enjoyed working with Steve over the years at the power plant. I remember when he first started construction on the log home!
He was a strong Union member and great crew member.

To Mary Pat & Family: I hurt for you & your family. Steve was a great guy. I'm glad I've had the opportunity to have worked with Steve & getting to know him thru the years at the plant. Steve was a leader.He led by example and when instructing a new hand he taught without prejudice and never intimidated anyone.Most of all he was patient especially when a demand of 1200 T's plus in one reclaim, expected to train individuals at the same time. When asked a question he would have an answer if he didn't, he'd find out and get back with you. Steve was genuine. I had alot of respect for Steve and we will all miss him. My heart and prayers go out to you and family.

During the 2003 contract negotiations with TransAlta I was on the team for the union with Steve and while we didn't always see eye-to-eye he was always willing to hear what your opinion was. I was impressed by that. Since that time, I have tried to display the same patience with people (although not nearly often enough) that he showed me during those and following discussions. Please know that you have my deepest sympathies for your family's loss. John L Grove

Several years ago, Jim Richey, Gary Noel, Patti and I nominated Steve for Employee of the Year. When Steve found out he was on the list of finalists, he appeared to be embarrassed and uncomfortable about the attention. That was Steve for you - humble to a fault, never tooting his own horn. He led by example. He made us want to do better.

To say he'll be greatly missed just doesn't come close.

To the family;
I worked with Steve, as his supervisor, in 2005 and 2006. I was a new supervisor to coal handling and relied on Steve's knowledge and professionalism to support me in leading the department. I valued and trusted his judgement and advice. Steve was a straight shooter who held the respect of everyone in the department. I know your loss ways heavy on your heart and nothing said can lessen that for now. They say that time heals all wounds, and what time also does for us is make us better people, and better at our jobs, for what Steve gave us during our time with him. I will miss Steve but I am very happy for having known and worked with him. My condolences to each of you.

Respectfully,

Paul Hails
