Steve Scanlon Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Steven Patrick Scanlon died peacefully at home in Ste. Genevieve County, surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, November 7, 2025. Steve was born on June 2, 1986, the youngest son of William "Bill" and Christa (Stark) Scanlon, and stepmother Georgina "Cissy" Scanlon. A natural athlete and teammate, he was quarterback and captain of the Hillsboro High School football team. Steve met the love of his life, Hannah Jokerst (daughter of Thomas and Mary Ellen of Ste. Genevieve), while studying at Southeast Missouri State University. The two were married on September 15, 2012, and two beautiful sons were born of the union: Samuel (age 8) and Noah (age 4).
Steve was as loving and kind as he was talented and reliable. A gifted carpenter and handyman, he created a beautiful home for his wife and sons. He was a dedicated employee of Thomas Industrial Coatings in Jefferson County for 13 years, traveling throughout the United States to maintain the nation's infrastructure. Steve could talk to anyone and built a wide circle of close friends and acquaintances.
Tragedy ran as deep as love in Steve's family due to a rare genetic disorder known as Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, which predisposes those affected to cancer. Before Steve's diagnosis of glioblastoma, he was preceded in death by his brother Joshua (age 3), mother Christa (age 36), nephew Caleb (age 13) and aunt Cindy (age 45).
To his living brothers, he was a constant presence and source of joy: Jeff Scanlon (Carol) and David "Christopher" Bowling (Carrie) could always count on Steve. He was a beloved uncle to nephew Ayden (age 17) and niece Grace (age 17). Besides those named, the departed man leaves behind a wide circle of other blood relatives and in-laws who will miss him dearly.
Steve loved his sons deeply. He was not just a father- he was Daddy. He bathed the boys every night and taught them the simple joys of catching a ball and petting a dog. He made amazing mashed potatoes. To his family, Steve modeled the tenets of responsible manhood: discipline, love and faith. His sons are now entrusted to his devoted wife, Hannah, whom he loved with all his heart and who cared for him to the very end.
The family is profoundly grateful to the extended community for their unwavering and generous support during Steve's three-year illness. This support - along with Steve's remarkable strength and good spirits throughout - were the rare silver linings of this tragedy. Hannah and the family especially thank Valle Catholic Schools, Ste. Genevieve Parish, the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi, Thomas Industrial Coatings, the Stanley Jett Family Foundation, and the Valle High School Class of 2005.
Any donations given to the family will be put into a Hardship Grant through the Li Fraumeni Association in Steve Scanlon's name. Living with Li Fraumeni is devastating so the family will create a yearly grant in his honor to help those struggling to pay for the cost of surveillance and the financial burden cancer takes.
Visitation will be Friday November 14, 2025 from 3:00 pm till 7:00 pm at Basler Funeral Home, and Saturday November 15, 2025 from 9:00 am till 11:00 am.
Service will be Saturday November 15, 2025 at 11:00 am at Basler Funeral Home.
Inurnment will be Saturday at Valle Spring Cemetery.
