Steven Randall Smith, known to friends and family as Steve. Born on January 18, 1960, in the heart of Austin, Texas, left us on July 10, 2024, in beautiful Burnet County.
Although Steve lived his later years in Burnet County, his heart always remained in Dripping Springs. Steve was a good mechanic and from his early days tinkering in the garage to his flourishing career. Steve was a proud millwright by trade and joined the Elevator Union in 1978 where he ascended to great heights, both literally and figuratively. During his 33-year career, Steve worked for Dover, Thyssen Krupp, and A-1 Elevators. He never met an elevator he couldn't fix or a colleague he couldn't make laugh.
Retiring in 2011, Steve traded his tools for a fishing rod and a season pass to watch the Longhorn football team. Whether he was angling for the biggest catch in fresh water or battling the high seas for deep-sea glory, Steve was in his element. And if you couldn't find him outdoors, he was probably in his garage, blaring 70's music. Steve's daughters, Amanda and Stephanie, knew well to bring earplugs when visiting their dad. Steve was so proud of his daughters and, bless him, his grandchildren.
His sister Cindy, her husband Dave, stayed close to Steve and helped him navigate life along with their children, Caroline and Natalie. His late parents, Tommy and Sheron Smith, surely smiled down as Steve shared his selfless and courageous spirit with everyone he met. Words like generous, selfless, and courageous were not just descriptors for Steve; they were a lifestyle. Steve was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back and never think a thing about it.
Steve's legacy is not just in the work he did or the fish he caught, but in the laughter he shared with his close friends he so cherished, and family. So, as we say goodbye to Steve-a true Texan who loved the outdoors as much as a UT game or racing around in a fast car-let's honor him in true Steve fashion. Crank up the hard rock tunes, fire up the boat, cast a line into the water, cheer on the Longhorns, and above all, share a laugh. Raise a glass, tell a joke, and keep the spirit of Steve alive. Cheers to you, Steve, for teaching us all how to live with a little more laughter and a lot more love.
