A limb has fallen from the family tree but please do not grieve for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived when I was strong. Steven Olen Armstrong, 67, of Louisville, KY, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Born on December 5, 1954, in Louisville, he was the son of the late Audrey Bowen and James Lee Armstrong. Audrey later remarried to Ernest Clifford Bowen, a tank commander stationed in Augsburg, Germany. His mother's fateful union to his step-father, Cliff, brought Steve to Germany as a teenager where he attended high school, and then met and fell in love with the love of his life, his Wonder Woman, Kathie Lynn Godwin. Steve and Kathie Lynn married on December 22, 1973. They had 5 children, Michelle, Amy, James Lee, Josh and Brian and eventually settled in Louisville, KY.
Steve was a Satellite Communications Technician in the United States Air Force for 7 years and was honorably discharged in 1980. After his service in the military, Steve's 1st job was at ITT Servcom and for 7 years worked as a Computer Technician. He then moved on to PNC Bank and worked as a Network Support Technician for 5 years. Steve's computer and networking knowledge landed him a job at UPS. For the next 25 years he enjoyed his job and made many lifelong friends in the Technical Services department at UPS until he retired at the age of 62.
When he wasn't working, Steve had a passion for playing the guitar. He was extremely well read and could discuss a wide array of subjects in depth. He was a Jeopardy aficionado. Steve was known by everyone in his younger days for having a great singing voice, he was the lead singer in a band, he starred as the leading roll in school plays and had a talent for doing just about anything effortlessly. Steve also liked to putter around with old computer equipment and was an amateur photographer in his spare time. He enjoyed knitting afghans but only because his hands were too big to knit booties. He enjoyed canning jams and jellies for the family, apple butter was always the most popular. He also thought of himself as an amateur writer with hopes of being paid for it one day. Steve's knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family.
He is survived by his wife Kathie Lynn, his children Michelle (Dusty), Amy, James Lee (Brittney), Josh (Angi), Brian (Nicole), his 18 grandkids, 12 great-grandkids, and his brothers, Richard (Terry), Michael (Ginny), Jamie, and Jimmy (Jennifer).
A Memorial Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home 12900 Shelbyville Rd. "East Louisville" with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 pm.
The family requests that flowers be sent to Ratterman Brothers East Louisville.
