Steven A. Black, age 78, passed away at the home of his daughter, Tammy, on January 8, 2026, in Eagle Mountain, Utah. He was born in Salina, Utah, on September 7, 1947, to Boyd A. Black and Mary Katherine Barger-Black.

Steve grew up on a ranch west of Torrey, Utah, where he developed a lifelong love for the land, hard work, and the people around him. He also lived for several years in the apartment above the general store—now known as the Chuck Wagon—which his parents owned and operated. These early experiences shaped his strong sense of community and independence.

Steve graduated from Wayne High School and later attended college, wrestling in St. George and Cedar City. He worked for many years as a heavy haul truck driver and rig pusher for Black Hills Trucking, a career that reflected his grit, reliability, and strong work ethic. In 1996, he purchased property in the Uintah Basin, where he farmed Alfalfa, corn, and raised cattle.

Like his mother, Steve was an avid rockhound. During the uranium boom, he liked to say that at age four, he became a “consulting geologist,” since he could name all the local rock formations. Wherever Steve lived, there was always a collection of rocks nearby.

Steve loved his friends and family deeply. He was known for his sense of humor, his love of telling jokes, and sharing stories about the “good old days.” He enjoyed laughter and conversation and was rarely short on either. He also cherished his “forever friend,” Boss Dog, who was always close by.

He is survived by his five children: Tammy Black, Dirk (Chevaun) Black, Jodie (Dennis) Lierd, Amanda (Rafael Sandoval) Black, Trina Lambourne, sixteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Katherine Black; his daughter, Suellyn K. Black; and his sister Beverly B. Albrecht.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses with Home Health and Hospice in Utah County for their compassionate and attentive care over the past few months. Special thanks to his dear friend Robert Walton, whom Steve thought the world of.
