Steven Massey Clayton (Steve), of Hokes Bluff, Alabama passed away in his home on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
Steve was born on July 10, 1959 in Gadsden, Alabama to Massey and Sue Clayton. He was born with a hole in his heart and was permanently handicapped in his mental capacity. Even though he had to have open heart surgery in his early teens, Steve lived a long and happy life – living longer than what doctors would have predicted.
Steve loved life in his own way. He will always be known for his infectious sweet smile and loveable laughter. He enjoyed vacuuming his home, taking rides on his golf cart and cutting the grass on his riding lawn mower. He truly cared about others and loved his Mom and Dad dearly. He was curious, affectionate and persevered through so many obstacles in his life. God gave Steve to us so we could witness His own glory and light through Steve.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Massey Clayton, Jr. and Sue Clayton; brother, Barry Clayton; grandparents, Justin and Lillian Barnes, Massey Clayton, Sr. and Dorothea Clayton; uncles, Jimmy Marbut and Pat Patteson; and niece, Rachael Clayton.
Steve leaves behind one sister, Robin White; two brothers, Scott and Jeff Clayton; three aunts, Mary Marbut, Priscilla Clayton and Patsy Patteson; one uncle, Jerry Barnes; several cousins, and 15 nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the doctors, medical staff, and home health for their care and loving relationship with Steve over the years and especially since his cancer diagnosis last fall. Most of all, we would love to thank his wonderful team of caregivers who became family and took care of Steve round the clock to allow him to stay in his home. When his parents passed in September of 2022, he asked his siblings if he could stay in his home where all his stuff was – referring to his golf cart, lawn mowers, and vacuum cleaners." Steve loved his home and his parents who took care of him until their deaths at the ages of 88 and 90.
A funeral service for Steve will be held at 1:00 pm at the Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Visitation for friends and family will be held one hour prior to the service.
