Steven J. Coppens (known to many as Spike) of
New Hope, PA, passed peacefully in his home on Friday, July 12, 2024 with his husband of 42 years, Jose Boscan at his side. Steven turned 73 years old on July 6.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Steven lived for a short time in Boston before coming to New Hope. Steven was a gifted and resourceful cook and host. When he first came to New Hope, he put these skills to use as a chef at Mother's Restaurant where he also served as a bookkeeper. A savvy businessman, Steven and his cherished husband, Jose, successfully invested in and managed local real estate in New Hope. An ardent advocate for New Hope and the community, Steven was a borough activist and was vocal in his support of New Hope. He was a regular at New Hope Borough meetings. Generous with his time and talent, Steven served as a valued resource for other business owners, encouraging them in their successes and advising them on how to effectively address any concerns or issues. The success of the greater New Hope area business community was of the utmost importance to Steven.
Steven loved travel and good food. He and Jose enjoyed hosting family and friends in their home. He had a dry sense of humor. You always knew where you stood with Steven and, if you were his friend, you were his friend for life. Steven was an animal lover. He and Jose raised and adopted many cats over the years; Nick, Ralph and Christina Elena being favorites.
Steven was predeceased by his parents Alfred Coppens and Regina Constance Jaskowiak Coppens, his sister Christine Coons and his mother and father-in-law Jose Angel Boscan and Rebeca Lucia Flores de Boscan.
He is survived by his husband Jose Alfredo Boscan of New Hope and his niece Dawn Coons of Kauai, Hawaii; his cousins Debbie Horner, Mark Jaskowiak and Michael Jaskowiak; his sisters-in-law Maria Christina Boscan and her husband Solis Rojas and Maria Elena Boscan and her husband Nancho; his brother-in-law Jose Miguel Boscan and his wife Bexy; Jose's nieces and nephews Solis, Karloren, Pedro, Ana Carla, Jose Angel, Karina, Rebeca Cristina, Eugenio, Cindy, Mark, Jose Miguel Jr., Jonathan, Jan, Juan, Luisa Elena, Paco, Rebeca Beatríz and Thom; and many beloved friends who will always remember him fondly.
A Mass will be offered on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 10:00 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 44 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to either St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (stjude.org), Doylestown Hospice, or to the animal shelter of your choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.

I met Spike and Jose back when we worked at Mother´s. He was very intelligent, funny even when he was feeling cranky in the kitchen, maybe even more so at those times. I liked him very much and am so glad to have run into him a few years ago. I am sorry not to see him again. My heart is with you Jose and Dawn and with all who loved him.

I shared many fun times over many years with Steven in New Hope, Philly, & Ft Lauderdale. Those times I will cherish forever. I know he will be missed by me, many others and especially Jose. Sending love.

Steven was my landlord in my real estate company's first New Hope office. He was a great advocate for New Hope businesses, and when I moved to a larger location he was supportive and gracious. RIP to a lovely human.

Steve was one of the first people we met when we started coming to New Hope for weekend getaways over 10 years ago. A true character with lots of personality, the one quality that we always think of when we think of Steven was his generosity and kindness, always expressed in a quiet low key way. He didn´t want or need your thanks or recognition but he was there to help when he could. To us that´s testimony to the kind of man he was. We´ll miss you Steve!

I have many good memories of my uncle Steven. Because of him, I learned to speak English. He taught me how to make carbonara, other good sauces, and was always able to explain anything to me. I also learned about accounting from him (he was so smart!) He was one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life.

I never minded doing anything for him because he was kind and good to everybody. I'm so happy he came to my wedding, and that everyone got to meet him and have good memories of him. I'm really sad that he is not here anymore, but I know he will listen to me anytime I need to talk to him. He is part of my angels crew now. Love you so much Steven, and I hope you´re having fun with all the people you love.
