Westhamptom, MA - Steven Greenbaum, 74, of Westhampton was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He passed away on August 11, 2025 at his home in Westhampton, MA. Steve was born in Lawrence, MA on March 11, 1951, and was raised in Newton, MA. His parents were Morris and Anita Greenbaum, and his older brother, Robert. From an early age, everyone who met Steve knew how brilliant he was. When he was in 2nd grade, at age 8, he read and presented a full book report on Rachel Carson's scathing indictment of pollution, Silent Spring. Later, he enrolled in an experimental public high school called the Murray Road School. It was there he met many lifelong friends. After graduation, he attended UC Berkeley for 2 years. He spent long hours reading in his apartment with the windows open listening to legendary musicians live, such as Jimi Hendrix giving free concerts in the park down the street. During this time, he also attended the now infamous Rolling Stones concert at Altamont (google it!). However, when he recalled his time there, he would focus on the time he spent volunteering with the Black Panthers; specifically, providing free breakfast to children in need. This was one of the first indicators of his life of service. After living in Boston for two years, he decided to return to college, this time at UMASS Amherst as pre-med; however, shortly after starting the program, he chose to switch majors and then graduated with B.S. in Mathematics. It was during this period of his life that he formed many of the friendships he has until today. In fact, one of these friends was the one who set him up on a tennis date with his future wife, Caryl. They both recalled often and with smiles how she expected to win using power alone, and when he continued to beat her, she threw her racket on the ground and told him to let her win one game. He refused, but obviously something attracted them to each other. They continued to date, and then moved in together, before he finally relented and agreed to make their union "legal." Steve was never one for formality, but for her, he would have done anything. They were married in Goshen, MA on August 17, 1980 and she went into labor exactly 9 months and 1 day later, and their son Daniel was born on May 20, 1981. On February 18, 1985, they welcomed their daughter, Sarah. The family traveled together to Maine and Cape Cod, often with family and friends. He ran the fuel assistance program at the Hampshire County Action Commission, and again, he accumulated lifelong friends. Steve then transitioned into working as a carpenter for the next decade or so. He then enrolled in Western New England College law school, where he graduated 2nd in his class. After working as a judicial clerk for about 2 years, in September 1998 he began his career as an Assistant District Attorney for Hampshire County, specializing in appeals. He retired after 20 years, and soon thereafter began working part time for the appeals division of the Berkshire County district attorney's office where he worked until January 2025.

Steve loved his cat Dexter and loved gin martinis. He enjoyed all types of sports and especially enjoyed watching football with his family on Sundays. Although Steve enjoyed visiting other countries, he relished his time at home. He loved music with a particular emphasis on jazz and Elvis Costello. He started playing the saxophone in the early 1980's. Steve will be greatly missed his wife Caryl of 45 years, his children, Daniel and Sarah, his brother, Robert, and his mother, Anita. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren whom he adored: Hannah, Eli, Danica, Shalva, and Azriel. He was predeceased by his father, Morris. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. at the Westhampton Cemetery. Following the burial, there will be a celebration of life at their home in Westhampton. All friends and family are welcome.
