We first saw Steve at a pub in Waldoboro. He was in full buckskins, with weasel epaulets, a coonskin hat, a big knife strapped across his back, and his flintlock standing in the corner. He was concurrently playing whist with the barkeeper and chess with the patron sitting beside him. When I reminded him of this some thirty years later he remarked, "Yes, and I won both games."
