Steven Wayne Hubbs was born on March 5th, 1961 in Elgin, IL to parents Harold Wayne Hubbs and Linda (nee McMillion) Stewart, of Anna, IL. The youngest of three children, Steven was the baby of the family, the younger brother to his two sisters Ladonna and Sheryl. He was an adventurous kid, and enjoyed fishing in Elgin's Fox River and riding motorcycles from the age of 12. Steve grew up to be a hardworking and dependable man. He was a loving husband and devoted father, warm-hearted grandfather, uncle, good neighbor, talented handyman, and an avid gardener until he passed.
At the age of 17, after an early high school graduation, Steve started trade school following the career of his father, to become a skilled Sheet Metal worker. He joined the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 265 of Carol Stream, IL, and later went on to become a Foreman, working on a number of commercial and institutional buildings with Abbott Industries for 30 years.
In his early twenties, Steve met his first wife Donna (nee Priorie), playing darts in Elgin. They married in 1986 and bought their first house in Elgin, where Steven designed and built a backyard wood deck, something he would continue to do at many of his homes throughout his life. Steve and Donna went on to live in West Dundee, IL, close to the Fox River so Steve could fish. They had two children, Caitlin in 1990 and Mackenzie in 1993. Although Steve and Donna parted ways, they continued to raise their children together and remained friendly through the years.
In 1997, Steve reunited with a high school friend Karen (nee Stevens) over coffee and had their first date at Navy Pier in Chicago. They went on to be married in 1999 and stayed happily married for 23 years. They shared their love of the outdoors, camping, riding bikes, fishing, cooking, country music, and riding motorcycles. Part of the thrill of their union was the joining of their families, where Steve gained bonus children Christie, Kelly, and Kevin Fischer. Steve and Karen bought a home together in Sleepy Hollow, IL, where they would raise the five kids, a couple of dogs, and a tank of fish. Steve retired early at the age of 50, but being the busy bee that he was, continued to work jobs that revolved around helping others in the community.
In 2011, Steve and Karen made the decision to move south to be closer to Steve's family in southern IL. They bought a home in Cape Girardeau, MO, another house where Steve built a beautiful wooden deck. Steve worked doing janitorial services for Jackson School District in Jackson, MO during this time. His love for gardening flourished here with an 800 square-foot vegetable garden, which brought he and Karen much joy to harvest and can their vegetables as a hobby. Steve was great at making salsa!
After the passing of Steve's father-in-law Alan Windham in 2018, he and Karen relocated to the warm weather of central Texas to be closer to Karen's mother Marie and her Aunt Lil, in Georgetown, TX. Steve loved being able to do outdoor activities year-round in Texas, including fishing on Lake Georgetown, riding his bike with Karen, and tending to their home and serene landscape. Once settled in Georgetown, Steve and Karen joined Crestview Baptist Church, where Steve was baptized in early 2020 and became spiritually closer to God. He truly enjoyed caring for his neighbors at Riverbend Village II and later making new friends at River Chase. He was well-loved working as a chauffeur to the elderly at the Grand Living in Georgetown, continuing his commitment of caring for others.
Steve joined our Heavenly Father on December 22nd, 2022, at the age of 61, surrounded by family. He has been reunited with his grandparents James Ray Hubbs, Florence (nee Haire) Hubbs, Louie McMillion, and Edna (nee Tellor) Watkins; uncle George Thomas Hubbs; stepmother Lawanda (nee Turner) Hubbs and stepfather Richard "Dick" Stewart; fathers-in-law Russell Stevens and Alan Windham.
His lively and comedic spirit lives on with many, including his wife Karen (nee Stevens) Hubbs, daughter Caitlin (Alexander Raynor) Hubbs, son Mackenzie Steven Hubbs, bonus children Christie (David Carpenter) Fischer, Kelly (Adam Taylor) Fischer, Kevin (Lauren) Fischer; grandchildren Evan, Alayah, Peyton, Brooks, Grayson, and Jameson; father Harold Hubbs, mother Linda Stewart, sisters Ladonna Dexter and Sheryl Shelton, mothers-in-law Marie Windham and Sue Stevens, sister-in-law Sharon Stevens; step-siblings Laurie VanBuren, Steve Hargrave, Missy Miskenas, Tim (Angie) Hargrave; nephews Ricky (Amy) Corn, Jason (Kristen) Fitch, Dan Owens, Derek Shelton, and David (Mary) Owens; many other family members, close friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
A visitation will be held starting at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, December 28th, 2022, at Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, TX. The service will begin at 6:00 pm following the visitation, officiated by Pastor Dan Wooldridge of Crestview Baptist Church.
