Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nie Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. - Carpenter Road Chapel on Sep. 17, 2025.
Steven died peacefully on September 15, 2025, at Chelsea Memory Care, following a recent cancer diagnosis.
Born on March 27, 1944, in Flint, Michigan, Steven was the son of Peter and Helen (née Lorenc) Lengyel. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Flint for both grade school and high school, where he graduated with highest honors as class president and valedictorian. After two years at Flint Community College, he completed his degree at the University of Michigan–Flint in 1966.
Steven went on to Wayne State University School of Medicine, earning his medical degree in 1970, shortly after marrying Marilyn Adamczyk on December 27, 1969. He completed his internship at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak before reporting to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, in 1971, where he served for two years as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Moving to Ann Arbor, he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan in 1975, then began a 35-year career as an anesthesiologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Ann Arbor, retiring in December 2009.
Steven was a faithful Catholic and a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Ann Arbor for 45 years, generously supporting his parish and community.
Steven had a wide range of interests. He enjoyed golf, reading, watching University of Michigan football and basketball, and making breakfast on weekends. He especially loved cooking traditional Hungarian recipes. The home he had on Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula was a place he looked forward to spending time in the summer and fall. Travels in the U.S. and abroad were exciting adventures; he was always eager to explore rather than relax.
Steven was predeceased by his daughter, Heidi Lengyel; his parents; his younger brother, David Lengyel; his younger sister, Mariann Lengyel Reed; and his in-laws, Chet and Cecilia Adams.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marilyn; his loving daughter, Heather Lengyel; and his caring son-in-law, Kevin Mailloux. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Geri Ruppert and Carole (Phil) Brooks; brothers-in-law, James (Sharon) Adams and Ron Reed; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Throughout his years at St. Joe's and Chelsea Hospitals, Steven formed many friendships. He will be remembered for his warmth, compassion, humor, and his famous margarita recipe. Patients and colleagues delighted in the mini album he carried of his family's dogs-Bremen, Earl, and Ernie-and the stories of their antics that he loved to share.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." Rest peacefully in the loving arms of God.
