Steven L. O’Brien, age 70, of Backus, MN, passed away on August 29, 2024, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was born on May 13, 1954, in Crosby to Eugene and Viola (Carlson) O’Brien. He spent his childhood on the lakes and in the woods surrounding his home in Outing. He graduated from Coon Rapids Highschool in 1972. After school, he became a CNC Machinist. He moved several times before finally settling in Backus in 2001 with his wife and children.

Steve enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, boating, computers, his flight simulator game, flying, trap shooting, and spending time with family. You would often find him at family gatherings cracking jokes with either an ice-cold Pepsi or glass of milk in his hand.

Steve was preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife, Karen O’Brien (Peterson); his brothers-in-law, Kenneth Murphy and Roscoe Anderson; and his sister-in-law, Mary O’Brien (Ferrell). He is survived by his brother, Gerald O’Brien; his sisters, Jeanne (Roscoe) Anderson and Christine (Kenneth) Murphy; his children, Nicholas O’Brien, Melissa (JJ) Redebaugh, Stacy (Alex) Raiden O’Brien; his stepson, John O’Brien; his nieces, nephews, and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Brenny/Kline Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes, MN. There will be a viewing at 10am, service at 11am, luncheon at the funeral home at 12pm, and interment in the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Emily at 1:30pm. Donations made in lieu of flowers will be used to honor Steve’s medical and funeral expenses.
