Steven Clark Sherwood, age 58
January 8, 1967 – January 13, 2025
Steven Clark Sherwood, age 58, of Greenup, Illinois, passed away at 2:13 PM - Monday, January 13, 2025, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Illinois.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM – Friday, January 17, 2025, at the Meyer Funeral Home – Bishop Chapel in Greenup, Illinois. A walk through for First Responders and Last Responders (Coroners) will be at 5:00 PM. Masonic Rites will be held at 7:00 PM, with a service to follow with Pastor Mark Cartright officiating. In loving memory of Steve, memorials may be made to the Greenup Area Fire Protection District or the Greenup Masonic Lodge #125. The obituary can be viewed, and condolences left at www.meyerfh.com.
Steven, better known to his family and friends as "Steve" was born on January 8, 1967, in Effingham, Illinois, the son of James Harvey and Judith Marelene (Clark) Sherwood. He graduated from Cumberland High School with the Class of 1985. Following graduation, he went on to attend Lakeland College and earned his degree in the Paramedicine program.
Throughout Steve's working career, he has worn many hats and has always been willing to serve his community. He was a Paramedic for 35 years and was currently working with the Greenup Area Fire Protection District - Ambulance Service, as a Paramedic, Assistant Ambulance Coordinator and a former firefighter. He was the Coroner of Cumberland County and was serving his third term. He had also been a truck driver, served as the Emergency Management Agency Director of Cumberland County for several years and had assisted at the Meyer Funeral Home – Bishop Chapel and Swengel-Odell Funeral Home in years past.
Steve was a member of The Field's Church in Charleston, a 30-year member of the Greenup Masonic Lodge #125, where he had served as Past Master and was supposed to have been installed as the Senior Warden. He was a 32-degree Mason and a member of the Danville Consistory of the Scottish Rite. Steve was also a member of the Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners Association.
Steve enjoyed camping, boating, traveling, dirt track racing, riding motorcycle, shooting pool, playing Poker and was a "Wheeler and Dealer". He was a handyman and always willing to fix what needed fixing.
Steve is survived by his loving family:
Wife – Shirley Sherwood of Greenup, Illinois
Children – Chris Ferguson of Greenup, Illinois; Jennifer (John) Hampton of Greenup, Illinois; and Tate Nichols (Amber Diamond) of Tuscola, Illinois
Grandchildren – Theo Ferguson, Isaac Ferguson, Lila Ferguson all of Greenup, Illinois; Ava Nichols and Avery Nichols both Tuscola, Illinois
Siblings – Susan Wilhlem of Casey, Illinois; Debbie (Max) Kuhn of Greenup, Illinois; and Mike Sherwood of Casey, Illinois
Nephew and Nieces – Ryan (Mykka) Darling, Erin (Justin) Hetzel, Dana (Bryan) Porter, Ashley and Emily Sherwood and families
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Les Wilhelm and great niece Ella Grace.
