Laura,
Steven worked with me while he was in the graduate program at the University of Minnesota. He struck me from the start as a serious and able scholar, and later. after having him in some of my classes, I was especially impressed by the beauty of his writing. I will always remember the many discussions we had in my office on questions of distributive justice.

There was never a time that Steve and Laura showed up for a social gathering that the conversation and sprit of the event was not raised by their presence. I knew instinctively that Steve would have the perseverance and intellect to complete his studies. I still remember his humor and powerful laughter vividly. So few of our fellow humans choose a life of the mind; when one who does leaves us the sadness is profound. Laura, Steve made all our lives richer for knowing him; my deepest sympathies.

Dear Laura: I just learned of Steven's untimely death. So sorry. I was Steven's dissertation adviser. He wrote a fine dissertation and I am delighted he finished up. I lost track of Steven but was told that the last several years were good ones.

Dear Laura:

I am so sorry to hear of Steven's death. He was a fine man. When we were in graduate school together, I was always impressed by his calmness, his kindness, and his quiet sense of humor.

Please accept my sympathy and best wishes.

Sincerely,

Steve left indelible memories for me as an office-mate, a co-conspirator in surviving graduate school, a humorist, and, most importantly, a human being maneuvering his way through an often wicked world. Steve maneuvered with a grace and ease belying his gentle nature.

Ahhhh I had noticed that the world looked dimmer these days and now thanks to the technology that keeps us all somewaht connected I find that Steve has left us. What hasn't left is the resolute feeling of integrity that Steven had. We hadn't kept in contact, there was no need. What we had to say to each other was said long ago--we understood each other and it holds as true now as then. Still it is sad to think that this world has been deprived of a spirit such as his.

Steve was a friend and colleague in graduate school and afterwards. Steve was an extremely good philosopher, and one of the kindest, gentlest people I've ever known. It is a great privilege to have known him. Steve has had a big influence on many, many students, and colleagues, and will be greatly missed.

I've known Steve for as long as I can remember, living next door to Mel and family for many years. The last time I saw Steve, my son and I were at Best Buy, TV shopping. I saw this guy, and said to Eric, 'I know him!' It took a few seconds, and then I said 'Steve!' We had a fun conversation, and he helped us select our TV. It was so nice to see him again, and I was really shocked when I learned that he died. Please accept our deepest sympathies. Steve was a really nice guy and a good person. I know he will be greatly missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Steven. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family members. I had the honor of knowing him for over 10 years working at Wells Fargo. He was always a hard working and dedicated employee. More importantly he was a wonderful and caring person. He touched many people’s lives.

Steven and I talked often about the importance of family and how much they mean to us. He talked often of his trip to Sweden. He especially enjoyed the time with his father. Steven also was blessed with a wonderful marriage to his wife Laura. You can clearly see why they were such a great match for each other.

May the memories Steven leaves behind help guide your family through this difficult time.

Laura,

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor of working with Steven as a manager at Meridian. I use to tease him that everytime he wrote a memo it was actually a thesis. Several members of our staff kept his writings for educational purposes. He was really good. We encouraged him to teach at least PT.
Steven lived his life well. He told me that he was proud to be the fisrt in his family to get his PHD. This meant so much to him. He also was emotionally fullfilled by having a wonderful marriage. He was very happy. Steven did alot of living in his short time and accomplished much. I hope that his memories will sustain the family during this difficult time. Doreen Thompson

Steven was a genuinely nice guy. How lucky I was to have known him; by working with him when we shared the same building – he at Wells and me at RFC. I found him to be quiet and soft-spoken, but always willing to help. He had a smile and a twinkle in his eye that he willingly shared, even when I asked him to bend the rules for me.

Dear Laura,
We got the news of your loss at work. I am so, so sorry. I never met your husband but I felt I knew him through our conversations. You spoke so highly of him and so lovingly. I remember you telling me about how you met, how you both felt so safe with each other. He sounded like such a kind and honorable man. My heart goes out to you, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know he will be with you still, through your time of healing.

BILL and MEL,

We want to send our condolences to both of you and your family. We didn't know Steven but when we were asked to pray for him we did a few weeks ago. Again, we're sorry for your loss of a brother and a son.
