Stirling Thomas

Stirling was born in Roff, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Thomas, mother, Lois Dixon-Thomas as well as Ron Herrin who recently deceased September 1, 2024. Stirling asked his mother why he didn’t have any brothers and sisters, and she very quickly said, “heavens, son, you are way more than any mother and father could handle”. Stirling is survived by David Kelly of the home and niece Melva Lou of Midland, Texas and nephews Dan Dixon and Drew Dixon both of Dallas, Texas. 

Stirling was raised in Del City, Oklahoma during the winter months and Roff, Oklahoma during the summer months. He loved spending the summer with his grandmother in Roff. He had the run of Roff and could do no wrong in his grandmother’s eyes. If you met Stirling, you’ve heard stories which included setting the barn on fire and making grape wine in the garage which spilled all over the preachers new Packard car. His stories made you feel like you were right there with him. His jokes were absolutely the best and no matter how many times you heard them you would laugh as though it was the first time.

Stirling graduated from Del City High School in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959. While in active duty, he was stationed in several locations with his favorite being Albuquerque, New Mexico and Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan which he claims was “life changing”. He was honorably discharged in 1961.

After the Air Force he worked at several jobs including American First Title and Trust. He attended Paul’s Beauty College and after graduation he worked at John A. Browns beauty salon in downtown Oklahoma City. He then moved to the beauty salon in the Sieber Hotel at 13th and Hudson for many years. Then opened his own salon at N.W. 50th and N. May Avenue called “Stirling’s Hair Styling Salon”. Wherever Stirling worked his clientele followed him just to hear his stories. He always worked with wonderful hairdressers and manicurists, of which some became lifelong friends for over 60 years.

In lieu of flowers Stirling prefers a donation made to the wonderful organization Calm Waters which help children and families in their grief journey caused by death, divorce, or other significant loss.
