Subashini Janardanan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lesko Funeral Home, Preplanning, and Cremation Services - Fairfield on Feb. 4, 2026.
Subashini Janardanan, 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Born and raised in India, Subashini, or Subi, as she was known to her family and friends, graduated from the University of Madras with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. She married G. Janardanan (Jan) in 1964, and moved to Tehran, Iran. In 1965, they arrived in Canada, where their daughter Anita was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Passionate about education for herself and others, Subi enrolled in graduate degree programs in every state where they lived after moving to the U.S. in 1966, including Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey, to earn the qualifications to become a teacher.

Subi and Jan settled in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area of Maryland in 1971, where they lived for many decades. She dedicated over thirty years to being an elementary education teacher in the Montgomery County Public School system, making many friends and positively impacting countless young lives. Her love for children brought her great joy.

Her pride and joy were her two grandsons, Arjun and Dillan. She was fortunate to experience much of their childhood and youth, and cherished every moment with them. A remarkable cook, Subi delighted in feeding others. She was also a botanist at heart; she loved gardening and watching her plants grow.

Subi and Jan were lifelong travelers, exploring the U.S. as well as Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and many other places together throughout their marriage and into their 80s.

A true "people person," her natural charisma drew others to her, and her caring ways created lasting bonds. She was happiest when talking, laughing, and enjoying the company of others.

She is survived by her sister, Dr. P.E. Malika; her husband, Gopalakrishnan Janardanan; their only child, daughter Anita Janardanan Valdes; son-in-law Edward Lawrence Valdes; and grandsons Arjun Edward Valdes and Dillan Janardanan Valdes.

All services will be held privately.
